Skyrim is no ordinary engine, it’s the modding engine. You could start porting any modern game to it and it will still have some merit.

I’m not quite sure I would call it “funny”.
“Surprising” or “confusing” perhaps.
And when you know a a bit more, a little “sad” might also come to the mix.

I still play it once in a few years for nostalgia, and it’s a fun trip down memory lane, but anything beyond fan patches don’t really interest me.

Nah, it’s not because new games are all bad as I assume you’re trying to imply. It’s a combination of nostalgia, and the fact that Bethesda really cooked a lighting in the bottle both with Morrowind and with Skyrim, and it’s worth playing around with both even still. Old stuff doesn’t become worthless when new stuff arrives.

The project started when Skyrim was new, but yea I get what you mean. I think the appeal it’s the most mature and tested version of the creation engine which is known to be extremely well moddable, so in the end it’s a good choice.
