  They are barbaric compared to Invisalign. My kids had traditional braces and every few months they’d go get them adjusted aka ratcheted down to the point of pain and the next week would be nothing but soft foods, that still hurt to eat, headaches, tension headaches and bad sleep. Slightly adjusting every week gets you minor soreness at worst for a day or two, it’s significantly more comfortable and at least where I live traditional braces are more expensive. In retrospect we should have probably not done traditional braces for our kids but losing trays/not keeping them on is a real problem with kids and Invisalign
