I picked up a book called The Pearl by Steinbeck. I’ve read it before but I revisit it every few years.
It’s short, but probably the most powerful allegory on capitalism I’ve ever read.

omg, another Steinbeck reader 😊
he is pretty much one of my favourite writers, his style has been a great influence on me
he writes as simply as possible using everyday prose to evoke powerful imagery
it’s so hard to do, you have to be precise , every word counts, he rarely uses idioms
it does have a down side, stupid people think that if something is easy to read then it obviously cant have deep meaning or be valuable or powerful,

I read cannery row when I was in high school and got hooked. And I agree he uses very natural language with very little purple prose.
Some of those earlier American authors were amazing.
