Comment on Should longer hair be handled by salons or male barbers?
NABDad@lemmy.world 22 hours agoI got one after a particularly bad experience with a barber.
Not a bad haircut. He was just an asshole.
I used to go a barber shop where you’d either write your name on their whiteboard under the name of the barber you wanted, or you’d just come in and sit down and get the next guy who was available.
Originally I didn’t care, but I’d end up with one short, older guy. I’m tall and long in the torso, so he’d complain that he couldn’t get the chair low enough, so I’d have to basically slide down in the chair until I was sitting on my back for him, with my tailbone over the edge of the seat.
That gets uncomfortable, so I started picking one of the taller barbers.
One day I was in a hurry and I didn’t want to wait for the tall guy, so I didn’t put my name up.
The guy took several people ahead of me who came in after me. At first I thought it was just people who stepped out and came back, but eventually I realized he was skipping me. Eventually one of the other barbers noticed and said something to him, and he started bitching about how I didn’t want him cutting my hair.
I didn’t know I was breaking up with a girlfriend. I thought he was just a barber.
The barber who confronted him took me next. I gave him a massive tip, and then I came home and ordered the flowbee.
That was a few years before the pandemic, and I’ve been using it ever since.

I remember those from two decades ago from a shopping channel. In Europe btw. So this has to be even longer around in the US or wherever it was invented. We got more shopping channels on public satellite TV in the meantime. This will probably be advertised around here too, still to these days.
Were (are, if you’re still using it) you pleased with the results of the flowbee? Did it take you long to get a feel for it? The fact that it’s collecting all the hair is a big selling point.
I’m cutting my hair with an electric shaver and a pair of good scissors for years now and probably saved thousands off euros. I don’t think I’ll switch to flowbee as I can by now not only cut my own but others hair too as I tried in lockdown when especially practicing barbers were a rare sight and only let you in their chair after telling the secret passphrase.
Just want to know if I can commend that product to beginners when the next pandemic rolls around.

I’m definitely happy with it. I took my time at first until I knew what to do, but now it’s pretty easy to get the cut I want. I don’t notice any difference between what the flowbee can do and what the barbers used to do.
I haven’t been able to convince anyone else in my family to try it, but I definitely recommend it.
