You put the opener on the top, not the side of the can. Image
The problem with opening a can this way is that the entire top becomes sharp rather than just the inner edge. With the inner edge sharp, you’d have to stick your hand inside to actually get cut.
Meanwhile, our electric can opener would like to have a word…
Wait that kind of explains that blocky metal part though.
