Depends whether you pronounce the H or not. If the way you say it doesn’t differentiate between hero and 'ero then you could use ‘an’ but it’ll appear wrong to others who do pronounce a difference between the two.

What do you mean “not grammatically wrong” ?
“An” is used before words that start with a vowel.
An orange. A cop. An easter egg. A yeast overgrowth. etc.

Ok thank God, I thought I was going crazy for a second. This is the rule I follow and I had a moment where I thought maybe I’d been wrong my entire life.
