Comment on Daylight savings starts this weekend
RustyRaven@aussie.zone 5 days agoBut it happens every year, so obviously it needs to be a plural. It’s like the money in my bank account being called savings, it’s only saving if talking about something I am doing in present tense. So at 2am on Sunday I will be daylight saving, and contributing an hour to my Daylight Savings Time fund.

I think that’s how most people think of it, so that’s why so many people get the name wrong.
But actually, it’s more like daylight-saving time. It’s (named as if it’s) the time for saving daylight.

Perhaps it’s time to update the terminology. We all know we are not really saving anything and we’re just messing with the clocks. Maybe we could have the Spring BBQ Extending Adjustment and the Autumn Sleep-in Morning instead, to try to get people to focus on the posititve aspects, with the time periods just being referred to as Summer Time and Winter Time.

I like to call it “government-encouraged death time”, considering its main impact is an increase in traffic crashes, heart attacks, and suicides.
