i know activision did it with the crash team racing remake. at launch, you could buy in game items (like racers) with in-game currency. it’s a currency you only obtained through playing the game, you couldn’t buy it with real money.
…until activision made it possible to buy the in game currency, and to accompany that, tremendously raised the price of all the items to entice you to pay…
I wanna say yes, I know a few different companies did it. I think Capcom did it too. But yes don’t trust EA. They’ve proven time and again they can’t be trusted and don’t really care about delivering a good product that’s anything but a cash grab
