I’m confused: yesterday, I took a sharpie, an Aroma 600, a Proyan 1k and a cherry tomato and sharpened the razor again. I checked the stone, and raised a slurry. The sharpie went away almost instantly, the stone was completely flat, but for the love of god, I couldn’t get the razor to cut the tomato. I tried and tried, but nothing. After 45 minutes, I was annoyed and simply passed on the Shapton 12k. Fuck honing! Today I stropped with green paste, and then on to clean leather. My expectations were lownto non existent, and I tried to shave more to see what it would be like. |
Turns out that this razor is plenty sharp, slicing into my ear without any effort 🩸🩸. The shave was very comfortable, with a nice face feel, though I cut myself twice.
Lessons learned:
- I have absolutely no idea when I have honed enough, nor what I’m doing. Somehow, it still worked out this time. I probably have to trust the sharpie more than anything else.
- I should try to get somebody to analyze the structure of the tomato skin, and make protective gear out of it, or synthesize the structure.
Have a good evening!

Yayyy! Excellent news!
I’m not clear whether you moved to the 12k after 45 minutes or skipped it

I used it for 20-30 passes

Huh. Interesting.
I wonder whether 1k is too coarse?
@gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social, do you have an idea?

It’s really too difficult for me to assess what’s happening based on the description. @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social, are you using a 25x-40x loupe to inspect the edge?
I did a quick check online and found that a Proyan 1K is approximately equivalent to a 500 grit Japanese stone. That’s too coarse for anything other spine correction, if true. Can you provide more specs on the Proyan stones you have?
Did you test with the tomato after your 20-30 passes on the 12K or just after the 1K?
Also, is this a Japanese Parker? I don’t get an image when I follow the link in the SOTD.
