Is it an under appreciated gem though?
It seems to get its way into the thousands of “under-appreciated” gem lists on IMDb and every clickbait website.
I’m not sure there can be an under appreciated gem anymore. Not when we are still talking about 30 year old films that made significant money at the box office and continue to have social and cultural relevance through memes and references.
I’m not knocking the film. It’s a hoot. But this constant media cycle of supposedly “rediscovering” things that are quite clearly not forgotten is a symptom of something unhealthy.

It wasn’t an under appreciated gem ever.
The movie was huge when it came out. Huge on vhs, quoted in schools, and was seen by damn near everyone between the ages of 12 and 30 during the mid 90’s.
You think anyone in the 90s wasn’t going to see a movie with Sandra Bullock, Wesley Snipes, Sylvester Stallone, and Dennis Leary?
It brought in like $160,000,000 at the box office, which was pretty good back in 1993 money and for like 5 years you couldn’t go a week without it showing on one cable channel or the other.

Sandra bullock was not famous when it came out. This was her break. Denis Leary was never a draw for movies.
I agree, though, it was a big movie at the time, a moderately successful hit and is not forgotten. These articles are more about nostalgia and are designed to be read by those that remember the movie, not to introduce it to modern audiences.

No, but just a year later was when her breakout megahit “Speed” was released and that definitely got more people to see demolition man on TV and VHS.
