That and the game can flag frames that are too different (camera cuts) to mitigate this problem.
What the game supplies is the current frame + motion vectors, but the framegen bits take over how the frames are displayed onscreen. This is where the extra latency comes from, at worst you are seeing one true frame behind what the game is rendering, while the presentation layer generates the intermediate frame(s).
- Comment on ELI5: How does Frame Generation even work? 2 days ago:
That is not strictly true, the actual latency increase is half the frame rate. Because the input is not just the frame image but also the motion vectors (in which direction the pixel moved) for the current frame. Frame gen also knows a lot about the image, like which bits have transparent pixels (which move in multiple directions at once) and when the game is done with the frame yet still has to wait for the GPU (time which can be used for more work with little impact).
Frame gen is much more involved than the old “motion smoothing” of televisions, the so called “soap opera” mode, which did increase the latency much more and had no knowledge of how the source image was built, so processing was much more involved.
Stuff like DLSS5 is supposed to use the same inputs (source images and motion vectors), now that is magic to me.

My broken QuietComfort headphones with the plastic earcup hinges would like to have a word…
I love my Bose headphones but man, don’t ever dare dropping them on the floor by mistake, they will shatter on the first hit.
To be fair in the past when this happened you could bring the broken pair in store to get a replacement or upgrade at a good price, but the policy was abused too many times so it was retired many years ago.

Same here. I did it the hard way with a modchip but these days it’s all software. It lived as a media player for a long time. I eventually replaced it with a PC running Windows Media Center, that was nowhere near as good…

Now that’s something I didn’t think of: Prey in VR. 🤔
I’ll have to give that a go!

Such an amazing game! Loved every minute. My wife and I still reference it to this day (random mimic jokes).
Truly saddened that the studio responsible for it was closed, it clearly was one of the good ones.

This is the right answer. I never answer those, you add new entries in your password manager in the notes for the main site.
If you answer truthfully to any one of those, your account is at risk.

Same for me, though I did splurge a bit ($150 I think) to get the game on a USB key shaped like one of the starships in the game. I will never get that USB key…
If they ever get done I will consider spending more time with it, I don’t really care for early access into an unfinished game.
I should have asked for a refund when we had the chance…
