- Comment on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row 1 week ago:
also I don’t think they offer e2e encryption for what the UK demanded.
afaik they provide e2ee for messages and mail but not photos or drive, which apple did encrypt e2e when ADP was enabled.
- Comment on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row 1 week ago:
the current law does not allow them to no comply. they can go to court, but they would be required to comply in the meantime.
unfortunately the UK law says not complying is a criminal offense, not just an administrative un compliance. so apple employees would be liable to criminal charges.
this is very bad but it’s the draconian UK laws the problem here.
- Comment on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row 1 week ago:
I’m conflicted on what would have been the best course of action.
if they would have fought this (in private) I assume people would assume they were complying. so the only option would have been to break UK law and fight it publicly. I am not sure that was feasible.
but this also just creates a precedent for other countries push apple to do the same

it is worse when you notice than other places with two names do not use that schema.
Google maps shows “Rio Bravo” only when in spanish not Rio Bravo (Rio Grande).

It’s reasonable to assume Google has been served that same request. it just has not been confirmed to any outlet.

Most platforms did not had e2e back in 2013. now most offer it (thought sometimes it is optional)
- Comment on I love my smart TV (From Mastodon) - Repost 1 month ago:
I honestly think the issue is that these people want a SmartTV but are annoyed about its downsides. When I bought my current TV I disabled the smartOS but ended up enabling it back because I did find value on its features.
I think the complaints are not well articulated. They do want the smart TV they just want good ones that dont spy on them or show ads.
- Comment on I love my smart TV (From Mastodon) - Repost 1 month ago:
smart TVs mostly can be used as a dumb TV if you reject the terms of services when you set it up. I understand they are annoying, but people making such a big fuzz about them are clearly just fabricating drama.
- Comment on Mozilla is eliminating its advocacy division, which fought for a free and open web 3 months ago:
IIRC they recently lost that google money in august since they were found guilty of monopolistic practices. that is why they’ve been reducing budget everywhere (except AI….)
- Comment on Looking for TV recommendations 4 months ago:
those screens tend to be overpriced for home use and their image quality is not the best since the signaging priorities are different.
I’m not sure about Canada, but in europe you just need to reject the terms of services of the TV OS and you can use it as a dumb tv.
- Comment on Looking for TV recommendations 4 months ago:
I would go for an OLED. LG, Samsung and Sony all make good ones. I love my LG C3 and the newer C4 is also great. You could even find a C3 in a larger version so it fits your budget. the more expensive G4 is also there.
Samsung is also good but lacks dolby vision and they seem to have a particular color profile that people seem to either like a lot or dislike.

ok. I was not aware the two letter TLD were more restricted than the others. thanks!

I don’t get why they killed. some regional areas have their own TLD. .cat for Catalonia, for example.
- Comment on China's state subsidies in green technologies significantly higher than those in EU and OECD countries, distorting competition, researchers say 8 months ago:
Is the abstract concept of “competition” more important than weaning out of fossil fuels in order to keep Earth habitable for humans?
You need to understand, this is written by economists, the people who make a living by justifying human suffering.

Same goes for words in foreign languages. it just causes confusion. I like how eclipse went for “temurin” (anagram for runtime) for their OpenJDK distribution. no way to cause confusion.

- Comment on Switch performs better running games through an emulator emulating the switch than natively. 11 months ago:
is this really an emulator in the traditional sense? (implementing certain hardware architecture using software) or are they just implementing some software to read and run games in the host hardware? I would be very surprised if this was a true emulator, but I have no idea about the current scenario.

- Comment on 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Sets Filming Window & Episode Count 11 months ago:
S31 was repurposed into a movie but it was on development for some time. Legacy was just wishful thinking by Terry Matalas.
IMHO Picard should have ended with an USS Picard instead of a new Enterprise. It was clearly just a hook from Matalas trying to get a new show
- Comment on Great question Michael 1 year ago:
this is incredible common. in software offerings, an enterprise account per user can be twice or more the price of an “individual one”. eg. an individual intelliJ license is 200€ for the first year and 600€ for the enterprise one

- Comment on OpenAI says it’s “impossible” to create useful AI models without copyrighted material 1 year ago:
What’s stopping AI companies from paying royalties to artists they ripped off?
profit. AI is not even a profitable business now. They live because of the huge amount of investment being poured into it. If they have to pay their fair share they would not exist as a business.
why OpenAI is actually true. The issue IMHO is the idea that we should give them a pass to do it.
- Comment on OpenAI says it’s “impossible” to create useful AI models without copyrighted material 1 year ago:
that would mean governments prosecuting all offences, which is not going to happen. I doubt any country would have enough resources for doing that
