i tried but i can’t lookup your comment because your instance is returning html instead of activitypub data

also remember just like how lemmy has it’s kbin, mastodon has it’s interoperable alternatives.
i bet a fair bit of the complaints i from people here (low character count, wanting to follow topics instead of people) would be solved by trying out a misskey fork such as firefish, iceshrimp or sharkey.
i don’t think there’s any instance out there with a char count lower than 1000, and antennas are really good (why limit youself to following a simple hashtag when you can follow any number of arbitrary keywords?) if you’re in a well federated instance (provided you’re ok with them not feeding into your home feed and them not being retroactive (so after you set up an antenna you’ll need to wait for new posts to filter in))
they aren’t as polished as mastodon since mastodon kinda ate everyone’s lunch in terms of developer attention, but they’ve been getting really good. just avoid flagship instances (> 1k active users) for the time being. scaling is still something not many of them have solved just yet

i was half considering boosting it outside lemmy out of context tbf
- Comment on When a user is banned on one Lemmy federate instance, are they banned on all federated instances? 1 year ago:
If they’re banned from their own instance, that ban federates out and they’re completely banned off that account.
If some other instance bans them, that ban is instance specific and that person can still interact with communities and people from other instances, except the one that banned them.
- Comment on Metadata and torrents. ELI5? 1 year ago:
I just want to quickly jot down that a lot of torrents are delivered through “magnet links” instead of .torrent files. An example is Arch Linux which has both.
In most cases after you install a torrent client such as Qbittorrent, Deluge, Transmission or what have you, your system will automatically recognize magnet links and will offer to launch the software to handle it properly once you click it.
- Comment on Metadata and torrents. ELI5? 1 year ago:
Metadata is “data about data”, so if your post is the data, the author, when it was posted, which community it was posted in will count as it’s metadata.
Torrents are a way of distributing files between computers. Without going into the details, everyone who downloads (leecher) also ends up being an uploader (seeder). Compared to “traditional” direct downloads this makes it both faster (as you can download different parts from multiple uploaders at the same time which makes things a bit more efficient) and more resillient (as anyone who has a complete download automatically adds one more source you need to get rid of if you want that file completely taken down)
- Comment on Why do modern phones have device encryption on by default, but computers do not? Why doesn't computers also get encryption on by default? 1 year ago:
Alternately, you can try using Linux, but my experiments with Tails are that it’s a challenge and that there’s no documentation to speak of.
Well, Tails isn’t exactly a “daily driver” Linux distro so documentation will be lacking compared to the alternatives. Something along the lines of Pop OS, Mint, or Ubuntu would be better for most people.

i have been on the mastodon side of the fedi since 2018
single user instances do not get defed’d out of nowhere. i’ve never seen that happen. now if you’re an asshole in a single user instance then maybe, but there isn’t anyone going “ooh i’m gonna defederate from this guy” without you provoking them in some way.

Or maybe we should give people choices on what they want to see? This doesn’t have to be an all or nothing thing.

if only I hadn’t bricked my jailbroken ps3. rust should be able to compile down to ppc64le Linux binaries
