- Comment on While we eagerly await the second coming of Steam Machines, it's worth remembering what a gloriously awful mess Valve got itself in over a decade ago 1 week ago:
Valve did such a good job learning from the original Steam boxes too. The controller was weird, but the best parts lived in in the Steam Deck and the new controller. The incompatibility issues with the original Steam OS showed how critical getting Proton right would be the Steam ecosystem. Multiple SKUs made it harder to verify compatibility, so now they have just 1 for each hardware type. A dedicated Steam Link box was kind of a waste, but now Steam Link works great on Android TV, Android phones, and on Steam itself.
Many other companies just abandoned their failures, but Valve took the time to analyze the “why” and salvage the good parts to them. No company is perfect, but kudos to them.

The smart thermostat that came with my house has that “feature” and I hate it. If I don’t walk past the thermostat for a few hours, it assumes I’m not home and then lets the house turn into an icebox.

If I have to scan each item as I put it into the fridge, why not just scan it with my phone and keep a less expensive dumb fridge?

Sadly, yes. A third grade transfer student from a good school district might very well be smarter than their teacher. Especially in rural areas.

A good teacher sees being corrected as a learning experience, and encourages their students to question them respectfully.
Bad teachers see it as a challenge to their authority.

How? Having an unlocked bootloader or root breaks Safety Net, which disables many apps. You need an unlocked bootloader to install custom ROMs.
Magisck used to be a workaround, but Google has been sabotaging it at the OS and hardware layers, so it wasn’t working the last time I tried a few years ago.

Toothpicks work great. They are wood or plastic so they won’t conduct electricity.
- Comment on What's your favorite game you played this year? (Doesn't have to be released this year ) 1 year ago:
Super Mario Wonder is the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World. There is so much attention to detail and the polish on every aspect from the gameplay to the way enemies act and react.
Super Mario RPG is the ultimate remake. It kept absolutely everything about the original while adding a few minor gameplay enhancements. Best of all, the graphics look like the original CG readers from the 90s but with perfect modern sharpness.
Deathbulge Battle of the Bands was an unexpected favourite. It’s a light-hearted turned based RPG with Earthbound and Undertale vibes, an amazing soundtrack and interesting and humorous characters.

That’s legit the reason why Lara Croft is the star of Tomb Raider.
- Comment on 'There's almost nobody left': CEO of Baldur's Gate 3 dev Swen Vincke says the D&D team he initially worked with is gone, due to Hasbro layoffs 1 year ago:
TSR, which was the company that originally made D&D got bought by Wizards of the Coast, which made Magic the Gathering. Then Wizards got bought by Hasbro.
Every product you love has been acquired by a large company that got bought by a larger company and then turned to shit. Until the government stops blocking mergers and acquisitions, this trend will continue.

- Comment on Every Franchise Xbox Now Owns After Buying Activision 2 years ago:
Blizzard has pretty much only made amazing games before Activision bought them. Activision also made a lot of good games back then. People couldn’t see how the merger would fick it up back then, yet it still did.
I expect Bethesda to get infected with the worst that Activion-Blizzard has to offer more so than the opposite.
- Comment on Every Franchise Xbox Now Owns After Buying Activision 2 years ago:
Blizzard would never have done that if Activision hadn’t been allowed to buy them. The new conglomerate will be worse than we anticipate in the same way Activion-Blizzard was.
- Comment on Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal approved by UK regulators 2 years ago:
There is no way that Gamepass is going to remain a good value once it’s past trying to get new members in the introduction phase. I would give it at most 2 years before the enshitification really takes hold. It could be merely months since they are trying to look good to regulators right now.
- Comment on You're basically losing money if you don't 2 years ago:
Don’t forget that you lose 3% to inflation every year, and even more when we are in hyper-inflation like we are now.
Gambling in Wall Street’s Casino is, by design, the only way to have a chance not to lose money.

The problem is living in a society that doesn’t educate it’s people.
- Comment on Why is the consumption of Meat considered bad 2 years ago:
It would be such a small but significant thing to pass a law requiring adding seaweed to their feed. Even if they passed the cost on, it would raise the price of meat insignificantly. It’s crazy that we haven’t done it yet. Same with making new roofs white to reflect light instead of absorbing it.
