- Comment on Who's worse? Nico Harrison (traded Luka) or Vlade Divac (wanted Bagley instead of Luka)? 2 weeks ago:
On the other hand, if Luka made clear he would not resign with the Mavs…
And yet that wasn’t the case. He’s clearly still pissed about what happened, and pretty clearly wanted to sign his supermax in DAL.
I’m honestly confused and I started thinking that trade needed an NBA veto
It definitely does. I don’t know why Silver’s failing to act, other than that the move fits in to his plans, such as the new (casino) owners ruining the team so they can claim Dallas doesn’t support it, so they can move it to Vegas. Still an awful look for the NBA, if so.
Btw, an article just came out by a team analyst that Dallas’ analytics dept have thought for some time that Luka’s impact isn’t really equal to his numbers, and that it would be best to eventually trade him. Still, that doesn’t seem to fit with 1) Luka just making the finals and 2) why Nico got such a pathetic return for him.
- Comment on Mavs GM Nico Harrison on stunning Luka Doncic trade: ‘It’s my job to make tough decisions’ 2 weeks ago:
And so we really felt like we got out in front of that.
Talk about some pitiful logic. Luka has seemed perfectly happy in DAL for ages, the team has worked hard and spent significant capital to field complimentary players around him, and the lure of the supermax is directly designed to help in these situations.
Plus, the idea that you have so little confidence in being able to retain a young superstar is some seriously weird shizzle that I’ve rarely seen before. It also seems to ignore the idea that in these cases, generally a sign & trade works perfectly well if needed.
It’s my job to make tough decisions
How about idiotic ones, also? Actually my working theory is (copying my comment from the evil empire):
The one thing about the Adelson-Dumonts that I think people aren’t factoring enough is that it probably wasn’t just meddling here, but moreso that in this age of growing oligarchy, they simply don’t care very much about appeasing their fans or trying to run a good franchise.
I suspect instead that the Mavs are more like a financial property to them, to be gutted & enshittified, then dumped in Vegas or wherever for an end-profit. And even if they’re hated (rightfully so), they still get to have that bling of owning a major sports franchise for awhile. So for them it’s still probably win-win, I think.
- Comment on [WSJ] NBA player Terry Rozier has been investigated by federal prosecutors over whether he manipulated his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme 3 weeks ago:
I can sort of understand why the other recent NBA player did something like this (can’t remember his name, but he was a bench/rotation type player making near the minimum I think), but at the time, Rozier was a multi-millionaire on a $23M/yr, four-year contract.
Why on Earth would he get involved in nonsense like this unless… someone was threatening he or his family, I guess?

TBH, I’m just a scared idiot.
One of my friends is a Pulitzer-nominated dude whose CC got hacked, or whatever it was.
- Comment on Dwarf Fortress - Adventure Mode is Out Now! 4 weeks ago:
This is probably going to sound lame as hell, but I’m that type of caveman who hates giving out their CC# online. Any advice?
- Comment on Dwarf Fortress - Adventure Mode is Out Now! 4 weeks ago:
I tried to install from the dev’s site last year, but was told I was lacking some critical file it needed to run. Googled it up and it was hard to tell where the file was supposed to come from, or where I could get a clean, legit copy. :S
I think it was a MS file, FWIW.
- Comment on [Beck] Heat suspend Jimmy Butler for seven games. 1 month ago:
It’s definitely interesting with hard-headed Riley being in the equation, but so far my thoughts are pretty-much that this is yet another case of an aging, overpaid star attempting to save face and leverage as much money as possible.
Jimmy did great things for the Heat, but he & his agent surely know that he’s not worth max money at any kind of extension. IMO the ‘right’ thing to do would be to stay with the org that wanted him, where he was part of a very good, overachieving team, and take a lesser salary.
I just have no sympathy for these aging big stars in these scenarios. It’s little more than rich-people problems, and part of why the effective cost to the fans of seeing sports keeps going up.

Love you, Sunaurus! (altho that’s kind of an American expression which perhaps… doesn’t mix culture-wise very well in terms of where you’re from, haha *sweating*)
It’s been an honor to serve…
Myself, It’s been a *total* honor to be part of your excellent (incredibly carefully-run) instance. For my part, I’ve tried to bring positive light to lemm.ee specifically, and Lemmy as a whole, across the last 15+mos. So thank you* SINCERELY* for giving me that chance, plus for expediently handling a couple of distressing issues that I barked about, here and there!
In terms of financial gratitude, it seemed like last time I tried, I wasn’t able to get my PayPal to get y’all a donation (in retrospect I think I should have tried via GitHub?), but let me know if there’s anything else (that or otherwise) I can do for you, please.
Also, via my occasional interactions with the new lead, I’ve had a quite satisfactory time interacting with @EllaSpiggins@lemm.ee, and I want to greatly thank Ella for that, too. ^^
Just… here it is:

Well, if you’re looking for absolute perfection in a ST theme, good luck. It’s not like Mike Post or John Williams were writing these suckers.
That said, I thought Alexander Courage did a hell of a job on the original.
- Comment on Thoughts on TAS Theme 5 months ago:
I find it ever-so-slightly pompous with all the horns, but otherwise, a cool remix of the original theme.
- Comment on Interview: Nicholas Meyer On Why ‘The Wrath Of Khan’ Endures, And His “Toxic” Memos With Gene Roddenberry 5 months ago:
Roddenberry from what I’ve read in multiple places sounded like a huge asshole to me, and nowhere near the ‘Great Bird of the Galaxy’ he liked to self-label himself as. Now yes, a very talented asshole, whose vision started the franchise, and certainly who put in much work on TOS (along with many other talents), but nevertheless a real PITA on a personal level who wound up burning most of his bridges.
Point is-- if Meyer lost his cool with him as a young guy, I wouldn’t be very surprised.

And… what symmetry would THAT be, dude?
- Comment on The "Friendship is Universal" poster from SDCC 6 months ago:
It’s been a long, loooong time since I’ve uttered these words, but: THAT ABSOLUTELY KICKS ASS. (or Romulan posterior, whatever)
Now, there’s always going to be a quibble, so here’s mine: Leonard Nimoy was about 6’ in actual height, and I believe Jon Frakes is about 6’3" - 6’4," right around Michael Dorn’s height, for example.
Still-- I get it. If the artist is trying to suggest the outsized influence of Spock, I understand. I mean, Shatner was utterly magnificent in his role, but Nimoy was also right there with him, a brilliant, iconic presence that helped turn TOS in to what might have otherwise been “Lost in Space.”
- Comment on The Decomposition of Rotten Tomatoes: The most overrated metric in movies is erratic, reductive, and easily hacked — and yet has Hollywood in its grip. 7 months ago:
People glom onto the only entity bothering to do benchmarks/reviews/ratings/whatever, or at least the only popular one, even if the system is totally bogus.
I don’t get any of this, really. MetaCritic and IMDB are also huge, and use alternate weighting systems, I believe. You can also just google the movie and underneath the ‘big three reviewers,’ there’ll be a bunch more quality review sites, like NYT, The Guardian, Ebert’s site and so forth.
So for anyone who wants to get a spectrum of opinions, it’s really not that hard. Not unlike how one should get reliable news.
- Comment on Time's Up: Biden Won't Withdraw, He Can't Be Removed, and His Reelection Appears Sunk 7 months ago:
RFK Jr
He’s also anti-vaccine and a conspiracy theorist disinformation-spreader. You know… a complete lunatic, and pretty much the last person to lead the Democratic Party. No surprise he went independent, then.
Anyway, Biden’s administration record has been superb (r/WhatBidenHasDone), so no matter his age, he obviously has a great team working for him. America better hope to hell he wins, or the ship is sunk.
- Comment on Paul George dishes on ‘disrespectful’ year of LAC negotiations 7 months ago:
Plus, guys at this level / age / injury history rarely seem able to acknowledge that they’re not worth what they once were, and that it could be a really bad idea for a team to overpay them. No doubt part of that involves their agents spurring them on.
The reason the Sixers did it is mainly because they’re getting desperate to make a good run with Embiid.

- Comment on Does anyone else feel like fireworks are a complete waste of money and a ridiculous amount of unnecessary Pollution? 7 months ago:
if it’s once a year. If we did it every night…
Around here (MidWest city), fireworks go off every night for a month before, and then a month after the fourth. And I don’t mean a small amount, either.
Basically, most of summer is devoted to fireworks play, with the fourth being a deluxe version of the “fun.”

Yes I agree, some privacy payment info would probably help folks like me in future. I don’t have much experience (nor confidence) in this area and could frankly use a slight bit of hand-holding, haha.
- Comment on Trying to use PayPal to do a Ko-fi donation... 7 months ago:
I’ll try again tomorrow. I’m having some trouble here today.
I also missed the part about using Github, and of course I don’t know what my options are for that either.
So for virtual CC, I’ll try setting that up with my bank, altho it might be a little bit of a long-shot. As an alternative, would you recommend something like… “Privacy.com” I seem to recall?
- Comment on Trying to use PayPal to do a Ko-fi donation... 7 months ago:
Thank you.
I’m indeed living in the USA at this time.In which case, do you have any thoughts about how I might make a donation to this instance? TBH I’m a bit scared about giving out my credit / debit card info, so I tend to err on the side of extreme caution.
Just set up an acct with one of those four agencies, I imagine?

So this is coming up on the one-year anniversary, when I was beyond frustrated with Reddit, when I decided to ‘jump in to the FV,’ and was matched up with this particular random instance / site.
Dudes… I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the universe.
OP has not only taken his personal time to help me across multiple various issues, but even resurrected my community when I accidentally deleted it a couple months ago(!)
Our little Euro-art community, such as it is, would simply NOT be possible without OP.
I am BEYOND grateful, sir. <3

Good stuff; thanks for sharing.
The contrast between Curtis’ outgoing personality versus the character she played reminded me a bit of Jeremy Brett playing Sherlock Holmes. I would think one’s native personality would peek through the stoniness of the role from time to time, regardless.
- Comment on Nikola Jokić, Jayson Tatum, LeBron James Headline 2023-24 All-NBA Teams 8 months ago:
LeBron James Headlines…
This seemed like hyperbole until I remembered that achieving ALL-NBA at 39yo is unheard of. Maybe in other major sports, but I don’t know that it’s ever been done before in the NBA.
I still have Wilt, Jordan and Kareem on my Mt. Rushmore, but it’s going to be damned hard to argue against LeBron as the hooved, horned animal when his career is done.
- Comment on [Game Thread] 23-24 MAY 2024 - Conference Finals Game 2s 8 months ago:
It’s hard to see the Pacers slowing down the Celts too much, and yet look what happened in game 1 before disaster struck.
Still, I’d love to see the Celts not given a huge rest before facing the West champ. From the ESPN schedule, it looks like a West game 7 could happen on June 3rd, with the finals starting on June 6th, giving the West a mere two days off, potentially.
