I think HBO had it right with their 13 episode shows. There’s just enough time for a rich, fulfilling arc, while not feeling rushed.
When it shrunk to 10, we managed it well, but always wanted one more episode. When it dropped to eight, suddenly there was no room to breathe.
Now with them creeping down to 6 & 7, I’m wondering why I even bother investing in a show.
TLOU is kind of frustrating. Season one had 10 episodes (two got squished together as a 90min pilot after they shot them, and that’s why it came out to 9). But season two’s seven measly episodes? Why adapt a show if you’re not even going to explore the story and characters in new ways? There’s no time to do that in seven episodes.
So yeah, when I watch these older shows like sopranos, wire, deadwood… I’m like “hell yeah, this is the sweet spot.” Oh add Andor to that list. 12 worked well for the structure of that show. Both seasons.

- Comment on 'The Last of Us' Season 2 Finale Viewership Down 55% From Season 1 4 days ago:
Sadly, without Pedro, the weight of this show is left on Bella’s shoulders. They’re a strong actor, but Ellie has not been written well this season. I hate to say that, as I have been a Craig Mazin fan ever since Chernobyl.
It was made all too clear when we got the flashback episode with Joel. Everything felt right again. And I’m not saying that because Joel was back. But because Pedro and Bella are THAT good together.
I think that the flashbacks should have been spread throughout the season so we never lost Joel’s voice in our ear, and we could keep seeing those sad eyes of his. It would have covered the multitude of sins we’ve seen in the pacing of this second season.

Holy shit this doesn’t come back until August 21st?? They’ve really been pushing it like the premiere was weeks away.

They all deserve Emmys, but this year will be stacked with some incredible shows. It’s gonna be an upset regardless, I feel.

I bet Neil has ideas for a third game, but I doubt he’d want the show to tell that story before the game did. I could be wrong, though. Maybe he’s good with not making a third game, but co-writing with Craig.
IIRC they also have content they cut (like the Jackson stuff), so maybe there’s more material already sitting around.

The Collider interview this article references is a much better read.
- Comment on The Last of Us will most likely last 4 seasons 1 week ago:
I understand the knee jerk reaction with GOT in hindsight, but I doubt they would extend much beyond the game’s end. I think it’s more about filling out the story with more of the world.
If you think about where this season has gone and where the focus has been, you might infer how season three will be written, and where that might end under the assumption there is a fourth season. We just don’t know yet.
Also there seems to be a lot of factions stuff being set up that might fill out 3 & 4.

They didn’t even try to make me watch a trailer for this. Sounds like an easy weekend binge.

I couldn’t get past the first episode of The Rig because it seemed cheaply made.

Insane that we saw footage of this show in sizzles last year and they couldn’t figure out how to deliver in 2025.

- Comment on Anyone watched Dune Prophecy? 3 weeks ago:
It might be better as a binge rather than watching it week-to-week like I did. Overall I felt that not enough was done with the vast opportunities the IP provided, and it seemed a lot of money was spent on a less-than-compelling season of “prestige” tv.
But they got renewed for a second season, so I am probably an outlier.

Assuming a similar post-production schedule to the first run, Lucy and Hank MacLean could be back on our screens in a bit over a year, landing the premiere sometime within the spring or summer of 2026.
Hoping for sooner.
- Comment on ‘The Studio’ Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+ 3 weeks ago:
I like this show. It’s silly and dumb, and technically masterful. The BTS of the camerawork is so cool to see, too. Writing the scenes as oners keeps the show at an urgent pace, so every episode is kind of unhinged. I think that is a fun approach to this weird industry.

- Comment on ‘Star Wars’ Series in the Works From ‘Lost’ Boss Carlton Cuse, Son Nick Cuse 5 weeks ago:
They picked the wrong LOST producer. Damon Lindelof is the one you want. Cuse has been showrunner for a lot of IMDb-7-out-of-10 stuff I don’t care to watch, although the Jack Ryan series on Amazon was pretty decent.
I really want to hate the nepotism going on here, but Nick Cuse has actually written for some respectable Lindelof joints (watchmen, leftovers), as well as station eleven and maniac.
Almost seems like a decent pair to helm the next 7/10 rated Star Wars show.
- Comment on ‘Andor’ Season 2 Completes the Best ‘Star Wars’ Story of the Disney Era: TV Review 5 weeks ago:
Tony was in the scriptnotes podcast a week or two ago saying that yes, the original plan was a season for each of the five years of Cassian’s life leading up to Rogue One.
But after making the first season, he realized he’d never finish at that scale, not just because of his own bandwidth or his collaborators (his brother, as well as Beau Willimon), but also because of how much time getting each season made would take. So many shows at that scale aren’t hitting a one-per-year pace.
So yeah, Tony didn’t want the next decade of his life wrapped up in this project. Who can blame him?
