Edited to account for blahaj updating to 0.19.3 … hopefully that’s the last big instance to change.
It’s been about a week since sh.itjust.works and lemmy.world updated, so results from those instances will start appearing again soon.

“OK Diablo, we’ve got a great tagline for a movie, we just need you to write the thing, yeah?”
- Comment on Get the PS5 now or wait for the pro? 9 months ago:
I think it’s difficult to know where we really are in the release cycle for this console, as it’s been disrupted so much by initial unavailability and COVID. Normally, we’d be due a Pro version this year, but it could be this year, it could be next year, it could be never.
Last generation I was happy with a standard PS4 until I played Control, and could see that it was struggling. I’m not sure there’s any PS5 games that are known to stress the hardware, and would do anything with the extra resources.
I’d buy one now if I were you. Worse case scenario: you’ll want to trade it in for an upgrade in a year or two.
- Comment on [Kind of weekly thread] What have you been watching? 9 months ago:
I saw a fan-edit of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines called ‘Terminator 3: The Coming Storm’.
It cuts out all the goofy stuff from the original, leaving a tight 90-minute dystopian thriller that I really enjoyed.
It’s only available in DVD-type quality, but I didn’t mind (I’ve only got a 1080p projector).
- Comment on Does ‘American Fiction’ signal the end of Hollywood’s woke era? 9 months ago:
In a fit of self-loathing, I viewed the page via 12ft.io to circumvent the paywall.
It doesn’t get better. “As an educated, heterosexual, Christian black man”, the author enjoyed “Boyz n the Hood,” “Menace II Society,” “Baby Boy,” “New Jack City,” “Sugar Hill,” “American Gangster,” and “Training Day” even though they didn’t represent his lived experience.
These are all films directed ages ago by men, but - somehow - it’s only possible to depict black men like this due to modern Hollywood ‘wokeness’. If you wanted to a black character to be - I don’t know - a policeman or a chocolatier, it wouldn’t be possible. This is why Wonka and Fargo Season 5 weren’t produced, and we never got to see them.
It’s 'cos of the women, you see? Matriarchs, like - um - Tyler Perry, prevent black heterosexual men from been shown as anything other than criminals. They know it’s the only thing white liberals will accept.
The author mostly liked ‘American Fiction’, in having the courage to unravel this great conspiracy. Apparently, it’s great to see to someone like him on screen, because Representation Matters of course, but he didn’t like the LGBTQ elements, because representation of people unlike him doesn’t matter, and that’s just “gay mafia pandering”.
- Comment on Christopher Eccleston Says ‘A-List Actress’ Accused Him of ‘Copping a Feel’ While Filming Sex Scene: ‘It Was an Abuse of Power, What She Did’ 9 months ago:
I imagine so. But I think it’s more the case that allegations don’t arise in the first place if the actors have the opportunity to establish who’s going to put what hand where before filming even starts.

There’s been grumblings from older actors about the need for intimacy coordinators. As Eccleston acknowledges in the article - this is one of the reasons why.
- Comment on [Kind of weekly thread] What have you been watching? 10 months ago:
Fargo’s just finished an entertaining run. I wasn’t sure about the finale, but I’m going to watch it again now I know what they were going for (also, it had so many fade-to-blacks for what would be an ad-break that that I thought ‘is this the final scene?’ about 5 times).
True Detective’s back! Sort of: there was a clearly a show called Night Country that’s been Cloverfielded into the franchise. But Jodie Foster’s awesome (obvs) and the first episode was good, slightly spooky, fun.
I’ve got about 10 minutes left of ep 1 of Monsieur Spade - it’s handsome stuff, but required more concentration than I had last night.
Season 4 of Taskmaster New Zealand is really funny. If nothing else, someone like Bubba shows how comfortably middle-class the UK version has got.
Oh, and I’ve downloaded - but not watched yet - a show called Criminal Record (it’s got Peter Capaldi in it)
- Comment on The Last of Is Part II Remastered Review Thread 10 months ago:
I haven’t yet got a PS5 but I’ll likely buy the upgrade from the website, for the sake of a tenner.
Interesting that they’re advertising it now how they probably should have done initially (as a game with 2 protagonists).

Nope, the crawler at lemmyverse has been failing
If the crawler keeps working, the next post will be on the 13th (which I kinda needed to wait for anyways following lemmynsfw’s change to how it calculates active users)

Crawler at lemmyverse has been failing for the past few days, so today’s results are over a wider gap than normal
- Comment on lemm.ee plans for mitigating image upload abuse 1 year ago:
The only thing I’m not sure about is who is the host instance? My understanding is that the host instance is that which the user belongs to.
That’s my understanding too - if you’re a lemm.ee user, and you want to upload to pics@lemmy.world, then when you post, you’re actually posting to lemm.ee/c/pics@lemmy.world. This rule change means that - for the moment - lemm.ee users can’t upload any images directly when making a post, irrespective of where the community is. They’d have to use an external host like imgur.
- Comment on Sad news for 3 people: ‘The Idol’ Canceled At HBO After One Season 1 year ago:
Rolling Stone estimated that it was 80% done before Amy Seimetz left, which is still a awful lot to just throw away. I’m not sure I’d want to watch the original version, but I’d happily watch a documentary about what went wrong.

To the extent it was ever Barbie vs. Oppenheimer, Barbie has very clearly won - by twice the revenue in whichever field you want to look in.

It’s presented in the article as such, yes. It’s the find something, literally anything, nice to say first strategy by the looks of it.

It’s maybe different for VFX, but I think for writers and actors, because the work is so erratic anyway and 'cos studios are trying to turn everything into a gig rather than a job, the WGA and SAG are ultimately the main providers.

I heard that Unions are especially important in the US because it’s how many workers get their healthcare (which is easy to overlook if you’re not from there, and aren’t really familiar with the Private system)
- Comment on #Poster #Movie The first official teaser poster for David Fincher‘s “THE KILLER” has just been released. 1 year ago:
Fairly unusual to see a poster where the gun is pointed directly at the viewer (it’s more commonly positioned at a bit of an angle, if not completely to one of the sides.)

- Comment on Reptile Trailer #1 (2023) 1 year ago:
It looks like the director for this (Grant Singer) has ‘only’ done Music Videos before this. It’ll be interesting to see where he ends up on lists like: RANKED: MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTORS TURNED FILM DIRECTORS - David Fincher seems the undisputed winner of this, but others seem hit-or-miss (ignoring questions of metacritic’s own validity for the moment)
- Comment on Gareth Edwards New Film The Creator Releasing In September 29 1 year ago:
For the studios, eager for Box Office profits, I would’ve thought all films were equally important.
The Creator doesn’t have actors with the same promotional clout as Timothée Chalamet or Zendaya, but - as things stand - it’s still likely to end up without having received any promotion at all from its writers or its cast.
Maybe it’s just that Disney are more worried about been seen to be reacting to the strikes than Warners Bros. are. - Comment on Foe - Official Trailer | Amazon Studios 1 year ago:
Assumed this would be straight on Prime with it being Amazon Studios, but it’s getting a cinema release first (on October 6th)
- Comment on Gareth Edwards New Film The Creator Releasing In September 29 1 year ago:
Interesting that it’s not getting its release delayed like Dune Part 2 (both films share a cinematographer, so if Dune had always been planned for March, then they could have used Greg Frasier more on The Creator, ironically enough).
I prefer this poster to the IMAX version:

It’s happened to me before. I don’t know why you sometimes get comment and upvote data, and sometimes you don’t (it’s not because of me being the first subscriber on my instance). When it’s happened, I didn’t get the old data, but I did start receiving stuff from the date I joined, so if you can see this comment on your instance’s copy, then that’s something at least.
- Comment on Is there a way to show or view replies to deleted comments? 1 year ago:
It’s interesting that all the replies (so far) are to you, rather than OP, because the behaviour of Lemmy is more interesting than just answering ‘No’ about their original query. So you could nuke everything in this post if your wanted to.
The ‘obvious trade-off’ part doesn’t acknowledge how much of social media engagement is driven by the urge to correct someone. So I think it’s something to be mindful of: if you say something wrong, and someone corrects you, then your choices should be: leave it be; strikethrough your text; or edit it to literally say “[removed]”, which are all better options than deleting it.
To give an example - from when I commented on an eerie Terrible Real Estate Photo with a oddly-placed chair in it:

The replies to me - that it’s an optical illusion, and that the sockets are part of building regs, have value on their own, and shouldn’t disappear just because I might get embarrassed by my comment. - Comment on [Discussion] What is your favorite original movie of 2022? 1 year ago:
The Artifice Girl.
Accomplished debut feature from writer/actor/director Franklin Ritch - uses a bunch of filmmaking tricks to produce an engrossing sci-fi film, even though there’s zero VFX, and I didn’t even realise it’s just a few people talking in rooms until it was over.
- Comment on If bullshit jobs are *really* bullshit, how do businesses justify the expense? 1 year ago:
I always took the term ‘bullshit jobs’ to refer to jobs that produce something that society doesn’t really require, and typically only exists because they need someone to deal with the output of someone else’s bullshit job.
