- Comment on Is Australia's Overton Window Shifting? 6 hours ago:
I was reading the first part of your comment thinking that anything left of the greens is too nutty for me, but then I would absolutely vote for any of those three policies.
This is a pretty common view where people think the Greens (or left of that) are extremist, but when given actual Green’s policies tend to prefer those policies when polled.

On the one hand, a bit disappointed that the Greens haven’t done amazingly. But I have a huge sense of relief that Dutton and the Coalition have been soundly rejected.

- Comment on Reminder if you're leaving Discord for this Revolt server ( Linux + Steam Deck devs / creators) 1 week ago:
I think there’s room for both, as in the old days there was typically an IRC channel along side forums that was typically a secondary channel (but not always).
But yeah, forums would be ideal, preferably with federation support so there is no need to make an account with every single one.

I’m laughing at that photo of Matt Canavan. It looks like he smeared coal all over his face for his working class cosplay. Truly, a man of the people.
- Comment on Why dont more people live in smaller communities , appart from economic opportunity (WFH is making it possible if not prefferable too) 5 weeks ago:
-
Poor infrastructure in many of these communities, and no way to get to larger towns and cities without a car. So you’re stuck with crappy chain stores and terrible quality food, harming your health. And it’s boring, because it can’t support many kinds of entertainment.
-
Smaller communities tend to skew towards conservatives, and there’s little way to escape from it (due to the distances and the lack of high speed rail). So expect more religiosity, more discrimination, and politicians that are even shittier than the average.

- Comment on Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a novel throwback to classic PS2 racing games like Midnight Club 1 month ago:
It’s still in early access, to be clear. Looks like it’s already in a good state, however.
- Comment on Why doesn't phones numbers have a "DNS" servet so we can just type in words like we do with the internet? 2 months ago:
Even just switching mobile voice standards is painful, as seen in Australia recently. In theory, you just need VoLTE support to use calling over 4G, but it turns out there is a bunch of other compatibility issues like emergency calling and carrier issues that complicate matters.

Tokyo Xanadu draws from the typical Persona UI, setting and day to day gameplay (except the combat system).

Also, people with power often like to harm people that are less fortunate because they believe they deserve it: “If they were good people, they wouldn’t need to work for a living, because they’d be rich. Since they’re not rich, they must be bad people.”

Yoink!
- Comment on When would it make sense for someone to get a domain name? 2 months ago:
Less than $10 a year depending on top-level domain and provider.
There’s also 1.111B class xyz domains which are very cheap number only domains at 1 USD a year or so but are longer and less memorable. Useful for private/test uses.
- Comment on When would it make sense for someone to get a domain name? 2 months ago:
One benefit is to obtain SSL certificates using Let’s Encrypt or similar, which is nice to have even if you’re only hosting services on a LAN/VPN, to avoid certificate warnings (and to benefit from using a reverse proxy). You can use self-signed certificates, but this is annoying in it’s own right.
You technically don’t need to buy a domain for this since you can use a free DNS provider, but you can use shorter names and sometimes there are cases where you might need to switch DNS providers, in which case you have to change that domain everywhere, which is quite disruptive. If you own your domain, you take it with you when switching DNS providers.
- Comment on Why is it when I watch a movie at home? It seems like I have to go deaf just this way. I can hear the audio of somebody speaking compared to the explosions and other special effect sounds? 3 months ago:
A bunch of reasons:
-
High dynamic range - I.e. the difference in volume between quiet and loud sounds, means that e.g. explosions have to be loud for speech to be audible. This is a good thing on the mastering of things, but players should support dynamic range compression, and they often don’t.
-
Poor quality speakers/headphones, usually without room correction. If the signal isn’t reaching the ears with a relatively flat frequency response (especially if midbass is higher than it should be) that can make speech difficult to hear.
-
Stereo tends to result in a relatively unstable center “image” which can make speech muddy. Center speakers help here, and there are some audio processing technologies that may help.
-
Poor mastering. Some movies are mixed in such a way that it makes dialogue difficult to hear.

- Comment on NSW election 2027: Labor pushes for compulsory preferential voting 3 months ago:
Despite the article claiming it will “seriously advantage” Labor, there’s a long history of these type of changes backfiring and benefiting opposing parties in the future.
I consider FPV superior to OPV in any case, so I hope this happens.
- Comment on Teen denies twice setting wire traps on bike path despite alleged video 3 months ago:
Read it as “wire tap” for a moment, and thought that was an odd thing to do.
This sort of shittiness reminds me of coal rolling. Just pointless anti-social behaviour likely aimed at “greenies”, although this is even more dangerous of course.

- Comment on It's been a feature of Australia's elections since federation. Albanese supports a change 3 months ago:
There was a significant push for one year terms early on, I’d much rather see that than a reduction in our democratic voice.
That sounds like a mess, especially if the public service has to deal with changing governments all of the time (if there was public service reform that limits the influence of the government in power I’d be for that, but that is challenging). And whether you like it not, the incentives would be for governments to constantly be in campaign mode with shorter terms.

The fact that you are calling this a life choice and not a societal problem also reveals a lot about American culture. A public health policy that relies on personal responsibility has never worked and will never work.

- Comment on Changes to HECS-HELP scheme could save debt holders $680 a year 5 months ago:
The minimum threshold being raised to 60k and pegged to average graduate earnings is probably the bigger deal here. Presumably that means it happens automatically and so conservative governments can’t leave it at a low value when earnings increase.
- Comment on No-grounds eviction banned in NSW and rent increases capped at once a year 6 months ago:
Long overdue change. The idea that landlords could just kick people out for any reason is just absurd and cruel.
