It’s a lot of different factors and unfortunately the movie industry has just been going on inertia and greed for years and this is the result of that.
Another commenter mentioned prices. Prices for everything have risen but when it costs more for a month of a streaming service than the price of one movie ticket it makes the movie ticket harder to justify.
Speaking of streaming, it’s obviously far easier to stream a movie at home rather than make the effort to go to the theater. Add the cost and complexity of child care if you’re a parent and a night out at the movies is expensive and a headache.
Take those two factors out and you’re still up against the issue of time and marketing. This is the more personal one for me so these examples below are my personal thoughts and feelings.
Before the night of the Oscars, I had only heard of two of the nominees for best pictures and only had the chance to see one in theaters. I see the advertisements but I’ll be honest unless the ad really piques my interest, I don’t know where to watch said movie. Is it streaming? What service? I don’t know they showed the logo at the end but I wasn’t paying enough attention. Is it in the theater? It is? Ok, let’s go see it, oh it was only in the theater for two weeks but you can stream it now on Amazon for $20. I don’t want to stream it and I wanted to see it in a theater. And if I want to see it badly enough, I don’t want to pay Jeff Bezos the money to do that so I’ll wait until it’s on one of the ones I subscribe to. Or it’s a movie like Mikey 17. I’ve never heard of that movie anywhere except on this website and about half the times it’s been mentioned, it was in articles like this saying, “why isn’t anyone going to the movies?” Same shit happened last year with “Fall Guy”. Movies used to be allowed to grow and find their audience, now it’s all the bottom dollar and extracting that value as soon as possible.

Let people like things, just ignore it if you don’t like it. Who cares, as long as it isn’t hurting anyone.
- Comment on Friday is a boycot day of online retailers. I saw this from CPUSA. 4 weeks ago:
I support this and I will participate, also I’ll agree that this better than doing nothing but I have to say that the commenter “echo” has a point. A one day protest like this will solve nothing and it’s as performative as John Lennon lying in bed for a week in the name of peace. It’s great that people care and want to do something but lasting change comes from committed and sustained action.
My plan is to start on the 28th and continue to buy as little as possible for as long as possible. If I do need to buy something, I will try to find a local establishment and use cash. Buying nothing for as long as possible will allow others to ask question and give the movement opportunity to grow.

Great movie! I was flipping channels in a hotel and stumbled across it. It was 1/3 of the way in but I was immediately captivated. I need to watch it all the way through at some point.

The Wavebird wasn’t the first wireless game controller but it was the first one I remember being popular. Though, it also came out a few years after the GameCube. Still love my GameCube and my Wavebird Wireless controller.

That’s the wonderful thing about trade work, you can just become an owner. Then you train young people, they beat up their bodies for a bit and then they become an owner. That’s how apprenticeship works! Or you join a Union who will protect you and make sure the owner of the company does the bare minimum and take care of the health and safety of their employees. Or you go a different route and consult. Or find a niche and start selling products that were hard for you to find but are needed in your industry.
People who boo hoo on trade work are in the same vein as the ones who say you need a college degree to be successful. The only thing you need to be successful is whats between your ears. What you do with it is your business but a lot of people have made a really good living out of trade work and they don’t have to “destroy their bodies”

Or you transition to an owner/management role so that you can stop punishing your body in your 40s

The trades: carpentry, plumbing, roofing, etc. Plus side, it doesn’t require a degree.
- Comment on If I'm stuck in the same area as someone who is clearly sick (runny nose, coughing etc) is there some combo of short/long breaths or nose/mouth breathing that's a better defense against catching it? 5 months ago:
I think a mask is your best option. If you’re trying to prevent against other people’s illness, you probably need an N95 mask, something that seals around your mouth and nose. A surgical type mask is more to control the droplets and spread of illness coming from you.

I just read your last paragraph and the recent comment and I agree there’s room for discussion in a lot of areas but people retreat to their tried and true positions because it’s comfortable and safe to think like everyone else around them. I wish you luck on your journey, self reflection and growth from a strong religious upbringing/society isn’t easy. I was raised Catholic but thankfully my parents and Catholic School weren’t the hardcore evangelical types so I was able to make my own mental/religious path pretty early in life.

I’ll be honest, I had to read your comments a couple of times to get the crux of what you were getting at. It’s tough trying to translate our depthless thoughts to a quick comment on a website so a lot of times I don’t comment. Or, if I do, I preface it by stating that I agree with the problem/issue, then I state my case/thought and then reiterate that agree again at the end because it doesn’t matter if it’s Lemmy, Reddit, or some other part of the internet, people read quick and then type something to get a response or make themselves feel better, unfortunately most people aren’t looking for a discussion. And, a lot of time the best discussions come from situations like this where a couple of back and forth comments gets to the real point.

From Wikipedia:The definition of “sexual activity” varies, and is often defined as an activity requiring physical contact (e.g., sexual intercourse, non-penetrative sex, manual sex, oral sex, etc.) with the customer.

The capuchin engaged in sexual activity for payment, call it what you want but that pretty much the dictionary definition of prostitution. It’s not a moral or god question it’s semantics.

- Comment on The Fall Guy to Megalopolis: is 2024 the year of the box-office megaflop? 10 months ago:
The movies just came out. I’d like to see Fall Guy in a theater but I’m busy, even movies that come out on streaming still take me a few weeks if not months to get to. I got shit to do.
Hollywood really needs to stop declaring flops within the first few weeks, whether it’s streaming or films in theaters. I really wish things were allowed to grow organically. Video games are essentially in the same boat. Unlike my dad who stopped watching movies because of the “Hollywood liberals” I’ve stopped watching/buying any new movies/tv shows/video games. I give them at least a year now. If enough people are still talking about it, I might buy it.
I finally watched the first Dune last month, still on the fence about buying Baldur’s Gate 3, I’ll probably get around to it eventually.
After wasting all that time typing this out, I realize that I don’t really care that much. The producers and powers that be don’t care about me so I’m not their target demographic. But, I take comfort in the fact that by the time I get to some new(to me) piece of media that it’ll be good because it stood the test of time(at least for a year or so).

- Comment on Drew Barrymore’s Co-Head Writer Says Drew ‘Will Prolong the Strike’ by Resuming Show: ‘It’s Not Too Late’ to ‘Stand in Solidarity’ With the WGA 1 year ago:
Conan is a WGA member that ran his show during the last writer’s strike. At the end of the day I think your second point is the most important, Jon Stewart and Conan are likable, Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher aren’t. Either way it’s a double standard that I think is valid to bring up.
- Comment on Drew Barrymore’s Co-Head Writer Says Drew ‘Will Prolong the Strike’ by Resuming Show: ‘It’s Not Too Late’ to ‘Stand in Solidarity’ With the WGA 1 year ago:
I’m going to start by saying: I stand with the unions and don’t think she should be working.
I have one question though, the article indicates she isn’t violating any of the strike rules for the WGA or SAG, so how is this different than when Jon Stewart, Colbert, and Conan kept their shows going during the last writers strike? No one called them scabs at that time. I don’t really care about her one way or the other, it seems like a double standard though.
