to anyone who wants to argue about how language changes and how words get retired and if we retire this word another will come along: First of all, I don’t believe you in this case. In the past 10-15 years, the word has fallen off in use, and the words that replaced it weren’t offensive in the same way.
I don’t understand why you think this argument, which I’ve heard described as the Euphemism Treadmill, doesn’t apply to this word. Retard is used to describe the slowing of something, like fire, without any insult to people. It’s just a word. As you point out, that word can be, and is, used as an insult which causes harm. However, any word can do that. Take “slow”, which I used above as an example. If it became the new slang insult for people of below average intelligence would you ask that people stop using it? It sounds silly to think of today, but that’s just because we aren’t used to hearing it that way. There’s nothing stopping a new word from taking the place of an old one, and retarded is not special. I guarantee you if people used it to laugh at others or said it sharply it would become just as hurtful.
We used to call people without jobs or shelter bums, then homeless, then housless, now temporarily unhoused. Once everyone is saying temporarily unhoused what will the next word be?
We’re absolutely in agreement that slower people are people too and deserve to be treated with respect. However, the fact that intelligence is a sought after trait that you are ridiculed for not having is the root of the problem, not the word used, and I don’t think this word has some special ability to get around the euphemism treadmill.
- Comment on Incel propaganda in my music app 1 month ago:
There’s actually a simpler explanation. Companies will purposefully make their products worse to keep you using them longer. By prioritizing the algorithm over your search results you’re staying in the app longer, seeing more algo suggestions, and more likely to give up on your search and click something else.
Good examples of this are Google purposefully crippling their own search, or Netflix making it impossible to see what movies they actually have. So they kneecap the product. What are you going to do? Stop using it? If the answer is no, then there’s room to make it just a little worse…
- Comment on Nova Launcher unashamedly inserts malware ads into your home screen now. 2 months ago:
Exactly. This is the killer feature that Nova has. So far the only launcher I’ve seen that has something similar is Action Launcher. I have been using it for the last couple weeks and when it works it works well. However when furst setting it up it would alwaus crash. I just launched jt over and over again until it didn’t? Development seems pretty slow as well.
I’d love to use Lawn Chair, but swipe up folders are part of my organization and a must.

It’s hilarious that the “too lazy to empty the trash bin” behavior can scale like this. Worst case for me is I pick up a couple things that fall when I empty it. For them… well as you said it doesn’t appear emptiable!

I was skeptical this cat shelf design would hold, but I picked one up and for the last year it’s been my cat’s favorite thing. Highly recommend them. Just make sure the suction cups aren’t warped, you put them in hot water, clean the window, follow all instructions etc.

- Comment on British plugs 4 months ago:
I’ve seen a few videos on these and the benifits of european plug design. My only gripe with it is the size. I know it would be a pain because everything is already built for the the current standard, but an updated “micro” plug would be a lot better.
In fact, why doesn’t the whole world collaborate on a new plug design that takes the best from both and combines into a 110/220 auto sensing plug. Sadly i don’t see that happening any time soon. It’s much more likely that USB-C continues to gain ground and becomes the defacto DC power standard for consumers.

Yeah, at this point it seems the arrangement is that he pays for her studies and lodging in return for doing all the housework.
Whether that’s a good deal or not is up to her. I can’t see it helping their relationship, but he doesn’t sound great in that department anyway.
