In australia it takes 3.5-4 years for a PhD. Then after you finish you move on to postdoctoral research, because doing a second PhD makes no sense

I wish I could just up and buy a farm, that sounds like the life to me.

There’s nothing wrong with having active discussion about how the largest Lemmy instance is being run. Maybe it’ll even nudge the admin to reflect on their policy choices, you never know.

What it seems to me that you’re suggesting is essentially crowd sourcing a mix of investigative journalism and data analysis, which is not a skill I think that just anybody can pick up and do properly. To be fair I’ve never tried my hand at investigative journalism, but I have done a few units of data analysis and trust me there’s a hundred different ways to do it wrong. Even among the experts, there’s a lot of disagreements to what the best approaches are. I had a teacher even say that if you give a set of data to 10 data analysts, you’ll get back 12 different ways of interpreting it.
That is all to say that I’m not sure how much you’d be solving by providing another forum for people to post their takes on public policy issues, but then again if you manage to attract the right crowd of critical thinkers, who also happen to be open minded enough not to insert their own agendas into matters, perhaps people might hold each other accountable?
BTW have you checked that something similar doesn’t already exist? Insert obligatory xkcd comic:

Do the numbers themselves have any specific origin or meaning?

I mean I guess I do agree with the sentiment that defederating shouldn’t be the default response to finding offensive content on another instance.
If you check the highest scoring comment on this post you’ll see it’s also me, because I also find the content on that instance highly offensive. I’m just wary because Lemmy still feels very new, and the our behaviours now might set a precedent for the future, and I don’t want every disagreement to end up with another instance defederated.
And no I don’t use the N word regularly, I’m not even from the US

It’s always refreshing to read an intelligent and well thought out response. The world needs more nuance!

I just had a look at the main page, and saw a post with the line, “The lying cunts at shit Just Woke are trying to claim that we’re Nazis because we fight against their far lefty woke ass shit about transgenderism and how it’s used to groom and mutilate children”, and another that says, “Reeeeeeee!! Don’t you understand that unless I read soft porn children’s novels to five year olds about the joys of anal sex, that trans kids will literally be genocided!!?! Reeeeee!!”
Yeah I’m comfortable with people not wanting to associate with an instance like that. You wanna be a part of it, go for it. Doesn’t mean the rest of us need be exposed to that kind of ignorance, bigotry and hate.

I was skeptical of this claim so I went and had a look. Here’s some of the posts I saw: “Polar Ice Sheets are thicker than ever despite predictions that the Arctic and Antarctic would be ‘Ice free’” “Leftist Parents “Flee” Florida Because Of New Laws Blocking Child Mutilation” “It’s strange how you never see pedophiles, im sorry, drag queens reading to old people instead of kids”
So yeah some pretty insane takes there
