- Comment on Britain is already becoming an ‘island of strangers’ – but immigration isn’t the driver 2 weeks ago:
Excellent article, agree with pretty much all of it. The cuts to public services instead of heavier taxes on those earning more (including myself), corporations, capital gains, landlords, etc has definitely added to a loss of social cohesion, as these contribute by far the most of refresh, renewal and refurbishment of public spaces and resources, let alone the establishment of new ones. My town has seen the closure of public pools, libraries, walk in centres over the past decade or so, leaving everyone high and dry except for… those who don’t need to rely on them.
Seeing the political class shamelessly exploit their fortunate position, companies take advantage of "increases in costs driven by supply chain inflation, the “panic” over trans women and it’s no bloody surprise no one wants to talk to anyone else. One of my main escapes is clubbing, not just for the music, the dancing, but the connection that can happen with a complete stranger who “gets” the music and feeling like you do (be it on various substances or stone cold sober, I can’t cane it like I used to…)

I’m assuming it’s at least partly related to the decades of underinvestment in the water network

I did study it at school but had to take Classical Civilisation for one of my GCSE options. Our default in English Literature was a Shakespeare work as previously mentioned (Merchant of Venice for me). I also recall studying An Inspector Calls?

Loved loved loved the Wrath of Khan style shots of the Cerritos’ saucer section, the DIS style Klingons, the ultimate fate of Starbase 80 and Carol along with it. Nice way to wrap it all up with a tribute to the ship’s crew, but I’m still so sad it’s the end at least for now. Time to hunt down the comics…

Holy crap, that was amazing. I guess the power of the multiverse is that, to quite 3 the Cole Porter standard, anything goes…
- Comment on Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Lower Decks | 5x08 "Upper Decks" 5 months ago:
Loved this episode, weirdly my favourite aspect was seeing all the “Other Deck” characters again: Delta shift, Westlake, Barnes, Bingston, Meredith, Stevens and the cadet who needed help studying.
Stevens in particular showed his worth as an organised and thoughtful adjutant to the Captain, was great to see him show his worth as something other than Ransom’s biggest fan or just the butt of jokes.

Heartfelt usually but not always equals The Tendi Effect on LD to me hah. I agree about the subplot being weak - both for Mariner and also Boimler/Rutherford which was pretty much a slapstick sketch.
I would’ve liked to see something like Boims struggling to think of a first book to take to T’Ana’s book club, with Ruthie enthusiastically but haplessly trying to suggest things (usually engineering related)

Really nice article of what she did to improve the representation and perception of women on Star Trek, also weird but cool that she worked on Quincy ME previously: womenatwarp.com/jeri-taylor-woman-in-the-writers-…
Thanks for your service and safe journey amongst the stars, Jeri 🫡

- Comment on The boomer generation hit the economic jackpot. Young people will inherit their massive debts. 8 months ago:
Couldn’t agree more, though I would say it also distracts from the need to highly regulate capitalism at large, i.e. encourage reinvestment in employees (pay at least in line with inflation, training, etc) over shareholder dividends or CEO bonuses

Heard a lot about that over in the US, no surprise crappy Ticketmaster brought it over here. Already on my avoid list as they block VPNs, kinda “you can’t fire me, I quit!” vibes but I don’t regret it

Some 113 people have become ill with E. coli in recent weeks and experts believe it is most likely linked to a nationally distributed food item.
The UK Health Security Agency says testing of samples suggests all of the cases since 25 May are “part of a single outbreak”.

Agreed, even as a huge fan of LD I could personally sense it being more difficult to write more stories for our lowly stalwarts of Starfleet in season 4. Better to be able to end still chanting “Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks!”
