- Comment on How does the world view America now that the Dems are in control of congress? Or are they waiting for the DIC to be thrown out? 16 hours ago:
We're a schizophrenic in a period of lucidity. That doesn't mean you should trust us around the sharp objects.
- Comment on Can anyone explain what the midterms means? Eg how it changes the power, how much it restricts Trump etc 1 day ago:
It's worth noting that Trump has claimed to have authority over a lot of things that were previously considered under the control of the Senate and Congress, or at least something that they had a say in. However, the current Senate and Congress for some reason have not stepped in to tell Trump that he doesn't have full/any authority over those things. That will almost certainly change when the new batch of legislators is sworn in, so there will be at least some additional restrictions on Trump in the sense that some of the restrictions he should have already been subject to will finally be applied.
- Comment on How do "pirates" go about getting their username uploaded with a torrent? Like Fitgirl or NoSteam or something? How do they become big and famous? Can the average joe do this? 2 weeks ago:
Pretty much nailed it, but for anyone out there thinking "hey I can do that"....
Point #1 is hard to do these days as a solo effort. A lot of these piracy groups have massive manpower backing them up, whether it's a paid business or just a bunch of like-minded enthusiasts.
Point #2 is a little more doable, but you'll spend all your time doing that to keep up with the release schedule of these groups. That or you'll have to rubber-stamp your releases without much quality checking, which will affect #3.
However, Point #3 is where small enthusiasts can absolutely shine. A great example (though possibly on the more involved side) would be Adywan, who made their name focusing entirely on releasing maximum quality Star Wars releases, recuts, remakes, and remasters. There's maybe a few dozen releases to their name, but mention that name to any piracy-aware Star Wars nerd and they will know it.
For as much content as the big names cover there's lots of stuff that falls through the cracks, whether it's entirely absent or just present with sub-par quality. Despite how large the Star Trek fanbase is there's basically one copy of the non-remastered version of The Original Series floating around out there, and it's a rather ancient encode.

If memory serves one of the affected medications is used to treat some kinds of heart attacks, so possibly literally yes, especially if they're pre-op.

It's not really complicated: they just include their name in the filename(s), whether it's in the readme or the installer or the media files. Upload enough releases named something like "Some.Show.S01E01.Pilot.1080p.x265-AverageJoe.mkv" and people will start recognizing AverageJoe and their work.
- Comment on How important is owning your own video games to you? 2 weeks ago:
Because of the second "M" in the term, i.e. "Multiplayer". MMOs are as much about the community as the game. For some they're more important than the game. MMOs generally only get shut down when almost all of the community has left... or in other words when a lot of the game's "content" is no longer available anyway.
That's not the case for singleplayer games, or games designed for local/couch multiplayer. There's no natural limit on the game being playable. For PS2/Xbox era stuff and before, as long as you have game and the hardware you can fire it up today and have the same experience (not counting your worsening reflexes). There's no justifiable reason why a company should be allowed to decide that you can no longer play the game you bought on hardware you physically possess. The only reason is greed, pure and simple. That's why people aren't okay with it.

As long as it's a parallel install and they haven't removed my ability to load WiiOS and use the Homebrew channel normally, whoever did that is getting an invite over to the next party for sure.

- Comment on Why do we need legal genders at all? 2 weeks ago:
It's medically relevant information. If you're incapacitated, this could be vital information to whoever treats you.
This one is overlooked and can be literally a matter of life and death. Certain medications react differently based on hormone levels for example, so even if someone was born male if they have a nominally female balance of hormones they need to be treated (medically) as female.
- Comment on Epic Games Launcher preview arrives - Native Linux support, Fortnite for Linux is coming and upgraded Easy Anti-Cheat 3 weeks ago:
The beta launcher has a bunch of features disabled/absent compared to the main launcher, not the least being the shopping cart. Not surprising that it would load faster when it has less to do.
- Comment on FireWire 5 weeks ago:
It was great in design but too few peripherals made use of it. The lack of input devices (e.g. mice, joystick, keyboards) meant that for most people it was far less useful than USB.
Still pretty cool that you could (and still can) use it for networking in a pinch, not to mention the decades worth of video devices that will happily dump their contents to DV video as long as you have a FireWire port. Finding a VCR with DV output is one of the best ways to digitize old VHS recordings if you can't set up VHS-decode.
- Comment on Ubisoft begin removing Ubisoft Connect from Steam with the new Ubisoft Connect Services 1 month ago:
Doesn't sound like they're going to backport this unfortunately. Damn shame: I absolutely love The Division but having it on Steam means I have to run two launchers to play it. It usually works... usually.
