  In my experience horse people tend to be like motorsports people. Usually it’s a family thing and the basic needs for entry into the hobby are already met by the generational involvement in the activity.

  I had to go read the article before I made the assumption that he went lifting instead of punching his girlfriend. However, that seems like a totally plausible explanation.
