I wonder how many times I will have to see a publisher significantly harm their reputation in the PC market in a yolo bet to set up their own ecosystem and store.
I thought Sony had been conservative and decided against it when their first steam releases hit but with this move it seems possible that a Sony PC ecosystem was always in the works and it just wasn't ready for those original releases. Oh well.
- Comment on Sega sells off Relic Entertainment, will axe 240 jobs 7 months ago:
damn, I knew that Sega had had a few big blunders lately, but having to straight up sell Relic is pretty huge... Wonder how their output will look from now on, it's no secret that some of their output under Sega was questionable (primarily Dawn of War 3) and one has to wonder how much of their failings were due to Sega's directive.

- Comment on EXCLUSIVE | Microsoft plans Starfield launch for PlayStation 5 - XboxEra 9 months ago:
Yeah, at the very least it would result in a brutal deterioration of the value proposition of future Playstation hardware. The harsh truth is that a large majority of Playstation players would not consider moving to PC or Switch 2 as a viable alternative, and Sony knows that, and would price accordingly. We all saw what happened the last time they felt they were uncontested in the market when they unveiled the PS3 and its pricing, but this time there would not be a 360 to punish them for it.
There is not a world in which a hypothetical PS6 isn't at least 599 ( without the hardware to make up for it) if it doesn't have a direct competitor. And that would have its own domino effect on Switch and PC hardware pricing... what are you gonna do, go to the overpriced PS6? Pleaaaaase. - Comment on EXCLUSIVE | Microsoft plans Starfield launch for PlayStation 5 - XboxEra 9 months ago:
It didn't end up being the system seller quality game they might have wished for, so why not get some more sales out of it. Nobody is gonna base their choice between Series X or PS5 on Starfield, but a lot of PS5 owners would indulge in purchasing the game out of curiosity. The maths make sense.
The problem is, you can extend this sentiment to most if not all of the XBox console exclusives that have been released for a good while now. They have unfortunately failed at producing a killer app for far too long at this point. Ever since Mattrick killed the momentum of the brand, they have never been able to recover it.
As much as I don't want a future in which PS5 is uncontested in the console space (Nintendo is too much its own thing to count as direct competition imo), it is starting to look like, from all angles, it just makes sense for Microsoft to focus on expanding Gamepass and their games as much as possible across all platforms because there's more money in that than in salvaging the XBox hardware brand.
- Comment on Silent Hill 2 Remake - Gameplay Reveal Trailer 9 months ago:
Most of the trailer looked like a PS3 game, especially in terms of animations and janky combat.
Honestly, combat and animation wise, I'd say that suggesting the idea that it is comparable to PS3 era games actually does a disservice to many of the games of that era (TLoU, Dead Space Series, the REs of that era, etc etc).
I might even go as far as saying that in some aspects it may even be outdone by the Silent Hill games of that era, Homecoming and Downpour, but that is probably reaching a tad too much.

- Comment on Silent Hill 2 Remake - Gameplay Reveal Trailer 9 months ago:
It was an unfortunate that Konami clearly doesn't see Silent Hill 2 (or any of its beloved properties, really) with the same eyes that its audience has seen it for years.
The fact that they thought that this is an appropriate level of quality for what is considered by many to be either the best or at least one of the best horror games of all time is incredibly disappointing, but ultimately not surprising. My reaction to this this has been mostly "sigh, of course".
I've seen some people throw blame in Bloober's direction, but the responsability of choosing a developer that was not way over their head eith the project lays on Konami, as does the responsability of providing enough time and resources for the project.
Konami clearly wants to have their cake and eat it by intending to get the results that Capcom has gotten out of their RE revival while putting one third of the effort and the care, and at this point all I can say is that I hope it doesn't work out for them.
It really sucks when the owner of the thing is the one that cares the least about it, what else can you say really.
- Comment on WWII first person shooters 9 months ago:
waaaay out of the timeframe you have specified but still with the same vibes, I'd check out Easy Red 2, as it scratches that specific itch of a WW2 shooter with scale. It is maybe too open at times for my taste but it is one of the very few modern games covering that niche. It does have optional squad management gameplay elements but you can ignore those in favor of playing a simple soldier, and the AI will do those jobs for you.

- Comment on An Important Update about Riot’s Future 9 months ago:
I just hope that these companies don't have the gall to complain about a lack of manpower or expertise availability a few years down the line. Because by coordinating all these layoffs, they are currently creating a vacuum in which a lot of professionals in the industry won't have any chance to acquire experience and develop their skills, and many will probably have to change their career trajectory significantly just to ensure their economic well-being. And once they see how greener the grass is outside the videogame industry, let me assure you, they won't be coming back.
If you are not willing to stick with your professionals through your thin, you don't deserve their availability and effort through your thick.

- Comment on Total War: Pharaoh's High Tides update, previously a paid DLC pack, will release for free on Jan 25th 10 months ago:
They did say that the intention was to eventually expand the size of the map in Pharaoh
One plan that we’ve always had since the early stages of development on PHARAOH is to expand the size of our campaign map as a free update, and to introduce even more factions and cultures to the game.
and one has to assume that Greece would have to be one of the expanded parts... But that was the original intention before Pharaoh fell on its face so who knows if that's still on the table.
- Comment on Baldur’s Gate 3 boss says gamers don’t want mass subscriptions 10 months ago:
I mean, now that the video streaming industry has shown us how the endgame looks like for subscription models, you'd have to be crazy to want that for the videogame industry.
Whatever short-term gains you can get in convenience or price by buying into their penetration stage are not worth contributing to leading the hobby down that road even an iota.

If you are young and there's nothing you really want to do with a significant amount of money, your emergency savings are decently big, and you don't intend to make a significant purchase in the near to mid future, then you find yourself a tax-free retirement account, a world index fund and an S&P 500 index fund and distribute money across them with the priority being reaching whatever is the max in the first one

- Comment on Starfield End of the Year Update 11 months ago:
It is not exclusively about the ammo, it's the combination of infinite ammo and the extreme versatility mentioned at the beginning of my comment. Of course you can use other weapons, but you don't really get a reason to because it is enough for every situation.
I don't understand the "you issue" thing when the statistics image linked here shows that the Beowulf was the most used weapon across all players. That's like, the most objective, empirical proof possible that it is not a "me issue"!
- Comment on Starfield End of the Year Update 11 months ago:
Aaaah the Beowulf, the weapon that contributed to ruining my experience further. Not surprised to see it is the most used. The amount of ways in which that weapon was more convenient than anything else is ridiculous.
In semi-auto it hits almost as hard as anything else you can find, but you find it significantly earlier than most powerful things, and it shoots decently fast. It is very common loot so there is a big chance that you will come across one that is souped up, so you won't even have to modify it. It is flexible enough that it works at most distances. But...But, but, but, there is something much much more important than any one of those things that makes it so that it is not worth bothering putting any effort into developing your arsenal beyond this weapon.
Do you know what is the most common loot from pickpocketing the extremely abundant security guards in the world? A loot considered so insignificant that you get a very high chance of stealing it even with relatively mid stealth and pickpocketing skills?
A bunch of 7.77 ammo.
Do you know what is is one the most common types of loot from the random bandits and pirates that you randomly kill by the bushload?
A bunch of 7.77 ammo.
Do you know what the Beowulf uses?
Exactly. The game considers 7.77 ammon trash loot even though the Beowulf is a very decent performer. I had 1600 rounds when I came across the first decently souped up Beowulf. Why would I put any effort into using anything else? I ended up using that weapon for 75% of the game! What the fuck.

I had some difficulties like these in the past, and what helped me was looking into amateur theater. There are part time (2 to 4 hours a week usually) amateur theater/drama schools that form closed groups and that group stays together over the years as they progress (with some inevitable degree of turnover obviously). I still talk to and meet with some of the people I met through that even though I left a bit after covid hit.
These kinds of spaces are good for people in our situation for multiple reasons:
- It puts us in an environment in which everyone is a newcomer, which helps when you struggle with that feeling of being the outsider.
- A lot of the people that go to that kind of space are people that struggle with shyness, loneliness or difficulties opening up, which means you are dealing with similar people to yourself.
- It inherently helps with shyness and closedness because the activity is all about opening up and being vulnerable. It's very shock therapy because you don't get any time to be nervous or second guess yourself, if it's anything like mine was, they throw you out straight into the water.
- You meet people of all ages and walks of life, which enriches you if you open yourself to it.
You will however have to look into the details of what kind of options are in your area for that and how they work and when the groups are formed and what levels there are and all of that jazz because I can't assume that it will work the same as it works here. If any of them are like my school was, then they offer smaller experiences (like a weekend or a month in the summer) so that you can dip your toes and get a feeling of how things work.
With all of that said, you should still look into regular therapy sessions while you are going through this. For people like us, our own brain is our worst enemy in this situation, and we need an external, specialized perspective that recontextualizes things for us. It will help more than you can imagine if you stick with it somewhat regularly.

Oh don't worry I'm not condemning the players, (I'm the first one in the line of absurd compensation compared to other jobs for what essentially amounts to writing "computer, do thing" in funny colors), I'm condemning the game. We are not to blame for navigating it in the best way for us, but there is definitely some absurdity to it.
- Comment on Announcing a new look and vision for EA's Frostbite engine 11 months ago:
After many conversations about how to represent this new chapter for Frostbite, we realized that starting from scratch wasn’t the answer. We wanted to preserve the best parts of who we already were, and for us, that meant keeping the Frostbite hand.
There are farmers growing food without which life is literally unsustainable making less than these people made for having multiple debates that essentially amount to "should the drawing still be a hand?", the way in which our society judges and assigns value is so fucking funny honestly
