The ARM nature of the Pi could make it difficult depending on Engine. Might be better to look at an x86_64 SBC to build a platform on. Those tend to be more expensive tho

This is why I really want to make my own open-source console platform.
Indie developers can target it, it can have some kind of cartridges (probably flash based) which people can sell directly, and complete open-source and hackable (but with simple ways to customize, so people can buy accesssories instead of making them, if they’re not maker inclined).
If enough people could use this console, then even AAA devs might consider it.
But the problem is it has to be decently powerful while staying affordable. Traditionally consoles lose money (recouped when people buy first party titles). It’s a failed business model as evident by all these major studios moving away from it. First SEGA leaving the console market, then Nintendo making Game Key Cards, and now Sony removing physical all together.
I mean tbh, people could simply target the Raspberry Pi 3B as a standard platform for gaming. Those still go for $35 unlike the Pi 4 and Pi 5 and are capable of 2D games and limited 3D games (perfectly fine for Indie). It runs Linux which is easy enough to develop for both in direct code and from game engines (except Unreal which is annoying about it). Add some sort of “card hat” like those readers a few people have made, and it could be great for that world at least. Wrap it up into a product for like $50 with a controller and it could be something
But idk, the AAA world is gonna continue to shift from these models. At least PC is a bit better with its digital storefronts, but it’s not perfect either, and you still don’t “own” anything.

- Comment on Baldur's Gate 2's co-lead designer was asked to make Baldur's Gate 4 after Larian declined: 'Having to compete against Baldur's Gate 3? That would be insanity' 1 week ago:
Here’s how it’s gonna go down:
- Hasbro sells Wizards of the Coast to Microsoft
- Microsoft forces Obsidian to make BG4 a. Sidenote: Blizzard will take over MtG mobile
- Microsoft forces Obsidian to imbue BG4 with AI generated slop throughout and make it a live service game somehow
- BG4 flops hard
- Microsoft shuts down Obsidian

I run Arch Linux with a 3080 RTX Mobile with 16GB. Games regularly use 10-14 of those (some even higher) even at 1080p, so yes, it’s a problem in Linux.

Now if I can just find a street fighter game that is in the same vein that doesn’t have stores with stores and nonstop ads for junk.
I mean if you aren’t playing SF3 Third Strike… you should be
- Comment on Got gifted an XBOX360 S. What now? 2 months ago:
What now?
Play some of the greatest games of all time for like $10 a pop. Don’t even gotta hack. The 360 is the most affordable console in terms of bang for buck in 2026
You’ve got:
- Skyrim
- Portal 2
- The og Halo trilogy
- Assassin’s creed II and IV
- Forza Horizon
And more!
- Comment on Game franchises you like, but wish were anothet genre of video game? 2 months ago:
I feel similar about the games, but opposite to the solution.
I think the problem is those games (Witcher 3, Skyrim, etc) build complex RPG stats systems and storylines and forget to actually make good combat.
You’d rather they fix this by going all in on the RPG and leaving the combat behind, but for me, I’d rather they’d forsake RPG elements and build an actual competent and fun combat system.
This is why I’d rather play any Zelda over any western action adventure RPG bc Nintendo actually makes a good game first, not a story
- Comment on Game franchises you like, but wish were anothet genre of video game? 2 months ago:
I wish Skyrim was less RPG and more adventure. Get rid of builds and stats and nonsense like that. Add more legendary items and less common ones. Make combat more fun and not just clicking.
- Comment on Favorite Modded Console? 9 months ago:
The GBA, not bc it has fancy features like the Wii, but bc the mods deliver an experience I couldn’t otherwise have.
Sure, running ripped games on a PS1 or full-on Slippi on a Wii is nice, but I wasn’t locked out of those experiences. I could use a PC or even my phone these days to get a similar experience.
However, GBA hardware mods are all about making the GBA the best it can be, not just doing something in yet another place like the Wii mods.
For instance, in the form factor of the GBA (i.e. the landscape form that is far superior to the SP), you can:
- Install a beautifully bright LCD (these days a display better than what came on the SP)
- Switch over to a rechargeable battery via USB-C
- Replace the awful mushy membrane buttons (which have, unfortunately, taken over the gaming industry) with tactile clicky push buttons
- Run any game you want off with a flash cart (if you’re rich enough for one).
With those mods and the extensive and wonderful GameBoy/GameBoy Color + GBA library, you get a truly elite handheld experience.
So yeah, loading backups from SD on a Wii is cool, but to me, nothing beats perfecting an already great device through hardware mods!
- Comment on Kazeta: the new Linux-based physical media OS (my article!) 10 months ago:
I’ve been wanting for a while to make something like this for a while but never got around to it.
I also wanted to get a dedicated piece of hardware ala the Steam Deck or a Raspberry Pi or something, so Indie devs would have a spec to target to ensure smooth gameplay while not having to do any kind of special build since it would run normal Linux. A proper Linux Console
I also wanted to design a custom controller for it. I actually got the PCB designed, but never made it and never made the enclosure. It was gonna be kinda like the new Horis where it’s half-modern controller/half-SNES controller, only mine is based on the XBox layout not the PlayStation’s, and also I had the buttons oriented somewhat like a gamecube, with a big “main” button, a smaller secondary button, and two auxiliary buttons (tho arranged in XBox order still)
Maybe I’ll come back to the project someday.
