- Comment on Is the 3DS worth purchasing despite it being "obsolete" today? 1 day ago:
Short answer: yes, if it’s something you can reasonably afford.
Long answer: Like any other game system it has its share of exclusives, mods, hacks, and other stuff. If that library and those capabilities are something you want and you can afford it, then go for it. If it’s outside your price range and/or you don’t see anything enticing enough for the money then pass. High demand doesn’t necessarily mean it’s something you should get, it just means lots of people want it and the supply isn’t getting any larger.
As far as the why: the 3DS has less viable emulation options than other systems (although they do exist and are always getting better), it’s difficult to emulate correctly without two screens and a touchscreen, it has a lot of games that have not been ported elsewhere, there are tons of cool hardware variants, and it became “collectible” as soon as it was discontinued thanks to immediate reselling/scalping.
For what it’s worth I’ve been into game collecting and retro gaming since about 2005 and I expect the 3DS will only continue to rise in price.

Baking bread is wild. When you start you do everything by the book and it’s meh. Then once you get a feel for what each stage is supposed to look and feel like you can just slap some flour around and it comes out awesome.

Game Boy carts don’t fail when the batteries die, they just lose their dave data. And most games didn’t even use battery saves. Thankfully replacing the batteries is a pretty simple job!

And not a single Game Boy cartridge. Now I’m just disappointed.

Very well stated, and echoes my sentiment exactly.
My game time is precious to me and sitting with that feeling of failure while I waste time just getting back to zero feels bad to me. I’d rather be, you know, making some sort of progress.
It’s a gorgeous game, very lovingly crafted. But I would cheer for some built in accessibility options akin to the most recent Ninja Gaiden that let me dial in the experience I want.

Boring straight white cisgendered man with regular hair and no facial piercings here: stop trying to normalize your shitty opinions by pretending like everyone thinks them. We don’t.

I have a startling revelation. Upon closer inspection it was a piece of wood.
I have lied to you all.

Yes, from roughly 1997-2013 according to that image. In that one brief 16 year moment, it peaked.
