- Comment on [Video] British granny in a wheelchair escorted by a gang of police officers for supporting Palestine Action, risking a 14 year prison sentence for supporting terrorism. 2 weeks ago:
The other posts are absolutely correct from a political standpoint, it likey being driven by lobbying. As well as that though that there were a couple of big incidents that led the government to feel they could justify the proscription.
In 2024 Palestine Action broke into an Elbit factory and ended up in a tussle with the police where one of them hit a police officer from behind with a sledge hammer, fracturing her spine (she’s back at work on light duties)
In 2025 Palestine Action broke into a military base and painted (government would say damaging) some of the aircraft.
They were labeled as a terrorist organisation just after the second.
I’m probably in a bit of a left wing bubble living in a major city but, anecdotally, most people I know seem to think you should expect some punishment/jailtime for breaking into a military base, but its just an abuse of power to label them terrorisds. It doesn’t feel like a very popular decision and every video of the police arresting grannys reinforces that.
- Comment on Rich People Are Becoming Less Willing to Help With the World’s Problems 8 months ago:
I’m all for eat the rich, but the question specifically was about global problems. It doesn’t really surprise me that people are less inclined to want to solve global problems if they see local problems that they think should be the priority. Maybe I’m giving people too much credit.
- Comment on Disabled people ‘effectively working for free for rest of year due to pay gap’ 9 months ago:
I don’t think it’s as black and white as that. There is a bit more info here: tuc.org.uk/…/tuc-disability-pay-gap-means-disable… Which includes a breakdown by level and shows people with a disability earn less regardless of level in the organisation. Granted there still could be different jobs inside each level but if the average disabled person, regardless of level earns less than the average non-disabled person either we have systemic discrimination affecting which jobs disabled people can get or affecting their salaries once they get those jobs (or both)
- Comment on Day 380 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing 1 year ago:
It’s friends only where you can join the game a friend is running. (Also splitscreen if you’re local). It’s super customisable by the person who sets the game up. Pretty much everything is adjustable.
- Comment on Could I render the computer-generated graphics from Toy Story (1995) in real time using a single modern home computer? 1 year ago:
Others have covered the topic of modern renders and their shortcuts but if you wanted an exact replica I think films like this are rendered on large HPC clusters.
Looking at the Top500 stats for HPCs the average top500 cluster in 1995 was 1.1TFlops, and today that seems to be around 23.4PFlops.
An increase of approximate 21,000 times.
So 800,000 hours from 1995 is about 37 hours on today’s average top500 cluster.
