- Comment on what unbiased media sources do you use? 2 weeks ago:
WaPo has been quite biased for quite some time. Rather than giving you a fish, another flawed source that’ll also likely fall victim to profit motive, I’d rather encourage you to glean what’s meritable from whatever sources you may encounter.
The tools that best help me do that are the book Manufacturing Consent and a course on logic. I found both online for free and completed them by myself. But, there’s perhaps even more value in group discussion. If you’ve an opportunity to learn as a group then favor it.
- Comment on Should I get a drum kit, or a pressure washer? 2 weeks ago:
I suggest you buy a pressure washer, a good practice pad snare, and a set of 5A drumsticks.
Learn to read music, rim strike, roll and paradiddle, stick control and technique. Drum sets come and go. But, you can enjoy stick control and technique with a pair of sticks and a brick.
- Comment on Why do airplanes have big front "headlights"? 2 weeks ago:
Expired VFR pilot here.
When driving at night a car has lights on the front, sides, and rear. All of them, including the headlights, are present so that others can more easily maintain visual seperation from that car to avoid a collision.
Aircraft have lots of incredible technology and talented air traffic controllers that help keep pilots and passengers safe. But, with a single exception, pilots will ignore everyone and everything to maintain visual seperation.
The exception is a TCAS RA.

Test if learning the drums is going to suck or be something that you’ll enjoy by trying to learn to play a basic beat.
Sitting position.
Assume your dominant arm is your right.
Three actions:
- Left Hand pats the left knee: snare drum
- Right Hand pats the right knee: hi-hat
- Right Foot taps the ground: bass drum
Count the beats: Out loud count, at regular intervals, “one and two and three and four and”: four beats counted as eight eight notes that comprised a measure.
Combine the actions with the count:
One: hi-hat and bass
And: hi-hat
Two: hi-hat and snare
And: hi-hat
Three: hi-hat and bass
And: hi-hat
Four: hi-hat and snare
And: hi-hat
Some people can learn this in less than a minute. When I started playing drums it took me roughly ten minutes. If this takes you ten minutes then you’re probably not going to enjoy what comes after.
If you’re faster then that then you should still not begin with a drum set. Instead, buy a snare practice pad and sticks, learn to read music with them, then learn to roll and paradiddle. That’ll keep you busy for a long time. This is how people learn to play with buckets and trash for a set. The expensive drum set comes after learning stick control and technique on the practice pad snare.
- Comment on Why is it that clasped hands tends to be the norm for praying? 🙏 2 weeks ago:
Do any holy books actually describe or prescribe ‘praying hands’? If so, what do they have to say about it?
Hinduism originated in the Indus River valley as a collection of oral traditions for a couple millennia. Then, 3000-3500 years ago, the Sanskrit word “namaste”, meaning “bowing to you”, and it’s hands-together pose was documented in what’s today the Hindu Vedas.
In the Vedas it symbolized the connection of the human and divine. Today “namaste” is commonly used as a respectful greeting. Instead of “namaste”, in America we might say, “Thank you for inviting me to your home.”

terrifyingly wired up with, like, cut up extension cords and chewing gum
They don’t own the truck. Chewing gum won’t vibrate loose; It can be uninstalled quickly for owner inspection and maintenance; It’s AC low amp with a fuse: a reasonably safe and cheap hack job.
The rare owner-operators have the authority and income to make wiser long term choices.

That’s a sleeper cab. The driver knows all about electronics: navigation, communication, entertainment. It’s not surprising that any one of them would have this idea. Most gigs don’t consistently route through parking with this much space.

If we can reason and communicate effectively then we’re much harder to exploit.
Education is priced above the balance of supply and demand because in wider scope it’s more profitable to deny access.
Denial of access to education is a very good way to leave many people with violence as their only practical means of change.

There’s a “black hole”, humanity’s beyond the event horizon, and barely anyone even acknowledges the existence of any of it.
But, no matter how hard one tries to sink into the void they cannot deny the human paradigm. Complex communication of the hypothetical us all that defines our species from the other animals. A human’s meaning-of-life is, at the root, the same as everyone else’s.
