Ooh. I like that. Ethical, and fun!
- Comment on Nintendo Switch 2 finally officially revealed 2 days ago:
Lol. I did put my money on “barely distinguishable from the Switch 1, maybe bigger”. I guess I win the betting pool.
I’m mainly happy because I didn’t want to be tempted to support Nintendo’s lawsuit happy asses, anyway.
If they ever release a Virtual Boy Mini, my conscience will never recover from my own hypocrisy, though.
- Comment on Microsoft lays off employees in security, experiences and devices, sales, and gaming — separate from performance cuts 3 days ago:
It’s pretty important to me to not turn to a life of crime, but I appreciate everyone laying off their security teams, and putting all their most valuable data in one place, just in case I should change my mind…
I’m not going to change my mind, but it’s awfully considerate anyway.
- Comment on Help me out: which looks better for the Duck - the neck tie or the bow tie? 1 week ago:
Yeah. This is the important nuance. I would vote for necktie duck, but I’ll carry bowtie duck with me to a party.
- Comment on Help me out: which looks better for the Duck - the neck tie or the bow tie? 1 week ago:
Both are perfect. But if I had to pick one, the Bowtie duck is the one I would carry to hell and back.

If you’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment from Slay the Spire, be sure to try out Monster Train.
- Comment on Call of Duty's massive development budgets revealed: $700 million for Black Ops Cold War 1 week ago:
Yeah, that’s the one I meant.
I did assume it was Bible skinned shovelware.
But being made by classic era Konami and getting a Steam re-release had me confused.
That’s good to hear. I guess I’ll keep an eye out for it on my next retro game deep shopping trip.
- Comment on Call of Duty's massive development budgets revealed: $700 million for Black Ops Cold War 1 week ago:
I dunno, since if recently got a Steam re-release, it seems like someone must still be buying Noah’s Adventure, even today.
- Comment on Call of Duty's massive development budgets revealed: $700 million for Black Ops Cold War 1 week ago:
That’s a good idea. I’ll keep it in mind. Thank you.

Could be, but my nephew played thousands of hours of CoD.
This is my admission that I don’t think I’m a good enough parent to counteract thousands of hours spent with a MIC funded game.
I actually trust my kids would probably do better anyway, but they know I would be disappointed if they bought their own copies of CoD, and they seem to respect that.
I don’t want my kids participating in the daily network effect of CoD, either - encouraging their friends to try it by their having a copy.
That said, if I ever catch my kids playing CoD at a random LAN party - without me - they probably realize they’ll get a lecture - that they had better invite me next time.
- Comment on Call of Duty's massive development budgets revealed: $700 million for Black Ops Cold War 1 week ago:
So like what games do you ban?
My kids are only allowed to play the Steam re-release of Noah’s Ark for NES..
Nah. I’m just fucking with you.
They’re specificcially not allowed to play the Call of Duty series, and anything that presents a lot like it. (Some modern warfare style games accept funding from the US military, and I can’t be arsed to keep track of which ones.)
I play Halo with my older kids, for some idea where I draw the line.
- Comment on Call of Duty's massive development budgets revealed: $700 million for Black Ops Cold War 1 week ago:
Those look like military industrial complex budget numbers.
I try not to let my kids play games that normalize war, ever since my nephew enlisted out of a sense of duty - after playing a lot of CoD.
Enlisting basically ruined his life. His choice to enlist interrupted his successful small business venture and left him with PTSD.
- Comment on Blu-ray players will soon be almost gone: Here's what to do 2 weeks ago:
Oh, sure…let me check…
And… I just went to look at mine, and it actually literally lacks any branding.
Super legit product, apparently. But it works fine, and it even let’s me skip the FBI reminder about how I should give up and just pirate MP4s instead.

What I’m hearing is that Sonic and Mario are going to sometimes render with a full set of five fingers (since AI often randomly adds extra fingers)…
- Comment on Blu-ray players will soon be almost gone: Here's what to do 2 weeks ago:
Last time I had to pick out a media player, my options included recognizable brand names and much cheaper devices from brands I didn’t recognize.
For modern shoppers, allow me to provide a cost/benefit breakdown:
The brand name players:
- Are about triple the price.
- Are engineered with the cheapest possible parts to ensure I need to upgrade before too many years.
- Prevent skipping ads on purchased media
- Prevent skipping the FBI reminder that I could have saved money through piracy.
- Faithfully refuse to play media purchased from any “wrong location”, as defined by everyone’s “friends” at the MPAA.
The no-name players:
- Faithfully responds to the remote control at all times.
- Plays any and all expected compatible media from anywhere in the world.
- Are probably still engineered with the cheapest possible parts to ensure I need to upgrade before too many years.
- Claims to also play various file formats I have never even heard of.
- Even allows skipping the nice FBI reminder that piracy saves time, money and effort.
I’m shocked that Panasonic isn’t seeing DVD player sales! Shocked, I say! (This is sarcasm.)
- Comment on Guy never bought a game on the Epic Store... Owns 200+ 3 weeks ago:
Because I have my entire extensive library on steam, I’m kind of stuck with them. And while they are not abusing that presently, I’m fairly confident they will someday.
Yeah. I am confident that long term access to classic games is a torch carried only by software pirates.
Don’t get me wrong, I adore things like the Atari 50th Anniversary collection, and what Evercade is doing with esoteric arcade titles.
But only a small fraction of the greatest games get that kind of loving licensed treatment.
For the rest of gaming history, software pirates are essential.

That’s good to know. Thanks.
- Comment on I’m Tired of Pretending Physical Media Isn’t Still Better Than Streaming Digital 3 weeks ago:
The irony is that some folks probably skipped Blu-Ray on purpose because they didn’t like the DRM.
Yep! I sure did!
Then they got streaming instead, partly because Blu-Ray sales flattened which allowed the industry to more quickly focus on streaming and subscriptions.
Yeah. That too. Damn it.
Now I’m buying DVDs, again.
I would be amazing at piracy, but I have too much to lose.

Oof.
“The COVID-19 pandemic made team stability difficult,”
Makes me suspect they were woefully behind the rest of the field in development practices. My team, and many others, gained productivity when all the wasteful manager ego stroking in-person meetings stopped.
Alternately, it tells us they rely on a weird dev kit with a lot of esoteric hardware. Though I would still call that out as being super out of date. Nothing is particularly hard to emulate today, for teams that prioritize having rebuildable test environmenta.
Just wild.
Bummer about the layoffs. Probably won’t fix their agility problem, though.

The other dwarf game I played was The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria.
Ha. I suppose that counts!
- Comment on Valve is fixin' to start some arguments over the holidays because 'All adult members in a Steam Family' can see your Steam Replay page 4 weeks ago:
“Dwarf” getting added as a catwgory was a publicity stunt write in campaign by Deep Rock Galactic players, if I recall correctly.
There’s not a ton of games with the tag, but both DRG and Dwarf Fortress tend to get a lot of play hours by their players, I think.
- Comment on The $700 price tag isn’t hurting PS5 Pro’s early sales 4 weeks ago:
I kind of get that. I stopped buying PlayStations when the PS3 was so hard to get for so long.
But I’ve never owned a PlayStation that I didn’t love.
- Comment on The $700 price tag isn’t hurting PS5 Pro’s early sales 4 weeks ago:
I’m not sure this tells us much, since the first buyers are usually the ones who don’t care what it costs.
The big question is how long can it maintain the higher price, once the enthusiasts all have theirs.
- Comment on The four horsemen of unmet financial expectations 4 weeks ago:
I’m no pirate, but if I was, I would pirate Mass Effect 3.
It’s definitely one of the titles that makes me feel like EA is handing out eye patches.
Am I misunderstanding that it’s single player?
Why in the world can’t I just give them some cash and get to play it offline without spyware?!
I know who will let me play Mass Effect 3 offline without spyware.
And they be good hearted folks, once we get to know them. Aye!

I know, right?! It keeps surprising me, in a nice way.

Yeah. It’s been a weird journey. I’m playing a lot more high graphics titles now that I can just quickly check for a ‘SteamDeci Verified’ badge.
On the one hand, mine is a first generation portable, so there’s a lot of never going to run.
On the other, it keeps surprising me what gets ported to it.
