- Comment on What happens to the content if an Lemmy instance shuts down? 1 week ago:
The way ActivityPub federation works, once an instance is “linked” (like lemm.ee linking with lemmy.world, lemdro.id, etc), the instance will now send them an event once a post is made or something like that.
For example:
- lemm.ee —links–> lemmy.world
- lemm.ee user makes a post A
- lemm.ee —notifies–> lemmy.world
- lemmy.world makes a copy of post A.
So yes, every Lemmy instance stores copies of new data from other instances once they link.

I mean that’s why it’s “mildly infuriating”, it doesn’t enrage me as much as Twitter requiring a sign in for the whole site.

- Comment on Why are peole hating on .world? 8 months ago:
I’d say the biggest criticism is that it’s the largest instance, and is also a “general purpose” instance, which sort of takes away from the main goal of the fediverse. When 90% of content comes from one instance, it opposes the goal of decentralization.
I chose lemdro.id because it’s nice and fast, the admins are very good, and it’s centralized around technology/software which I like

It is not weird. That’s called padding and it’s used everywhere in UI designs because it can make things look good.

Once scaled sort arrives on Lemmy, smaller communities will be ranked higher and not knocked out by the meme communities and stuff like that.
