- Comment on Ok to dual boot Linux and Windows 10? 1 week ago:
What loopy’s saying. I find it easier to be like “Disk A: Linux, Disk B: Windows” and use separate EFI partitions, so I generally do that on computers where I can stuff two separate disks, but I have machines with only one hard drive, and then I just go “First half of disk: Windows, second half: Linux.” I agree that install Windows then Linux is the way to go. True story: quadruple booted an old MacBook Pro: supported Mac OS, OCLP Mac OS, Windows 11, Ubuntu. Did it for a friend, spent forever getting it all to work, then he set it down in a coffee shop and walked away. Never saw it again.

I did a tailscale to a VPS for a while, but then the VPS host got bought by Microslop…
- Comment on If you need a portable reader, is there any reason to choose an e-reader over your phone? 2 weeks ago:
I spent two years with inexplicable migraines. LCDs literally hurt. As such, I have an extensive collection of e-ink devices! Seriously, for a sad few, a typical display might as well be like hammering your skull every time you look at it. Hell, I even used the Windows Remote Desktop app on my Inknote just to do basic computing. (I got better.)
- Comment on Why do elevator's have that Kenny G like music? Why not something with a little beat to it? 2 weeks ago:
I set up the system to allow elevator music in the waiting room at a clinic, and gave it to the receptionist with instructions on how to use it… That clinic gets very Honky-Tonk. All the time.
- Comment on marble balls floating on water are nice sculptures. why doesn't the water squirt out like when you pinch a garden hose ? 2 weeks ago:
My advice: (not to OP.) Block this guy. I don’t think he understands that he’s not on Reddit and karma doesn’t matter. He’s trolling and wasting your time. He asked, people answered, and now he’s just arguing. Troll behavior. I’m blocking him, and my Lemmy experience will be better for it.

I was coming to say this. Say hi to Electra and Demeter for me!

Yup.
- Comment on What is a DNS address ? 2 months ago:
Could you mean the IP address of the DNS server? I think of DNS like a phone book. It’s a list of all the domain names like canadiancancersociety.org and their corresponding IP addresses like 209.15.37.6. the DNS server would basically be “where’s the phone book?” The most common ones being 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1, Google and CloudFlare. I use 9.9.9.9!

- Comment on Can I still bypass Microsoft account creation when reinstalling windows through the "reset this PC" option? 3 months ago:
Yeah, I would do the same… Loving toolbox! I have to support some clients with VMWare though…

Hehe… Try installing VMware Player or Genshin Impact in Fedora! (Those are my two most recent headaches.) Any OS can be a pain, it just seems like Linux is getting friendlier every year and Microsoft becomes more overtly the enemy.

I just got top work and asked a senior tech: 24H2 + a 25H2 enablement package to make bypassnro still work for us. Geez.
- Comment on Can I still bypass Microsoft account creation when reinstalling windows through the "reset this PC" option? 3 months ago:
Huh, that’s weird that I’ve been able to use the bypass NRO trick pretty consistently at work and at home… I should have mentioned the Rufus thing too, but he was doing this as a reset, not as a new install, so I didn’t.
- Comment on Can I still bypass Microsoft account creation when reinstalling windows through the "reset this PC" option? 3 months ago:
Reset, once it’s done downloading (if you go cloud), pull your network cable. When it gets to “let’s get you online” hit shift f-10 which pulls up the terminal window. Type oobe\bypassnro and hit enter. Stay offline, and get back to the same spot in the install process but this time you’ll have a “I don’t have internet” link as an option. It’ll protest, but you can then move forward with a local account. I literally did it yesterday.
Once you have a local account built, Windows will give you “sign in” alerts in settings and in security.
Just for the record, I use Linux. I do however work in a Windows shop and understand that “just use Linux” isn’t at all helpful when someone asks a Windows question.

My parents lived in a part of the world where they didn’t always have phones. Dad lived on a farm, mom lived in town. School together, Church together. After school, Dad would go “help around the house” at mom’s. Or vice versa. Once they got old enough, one or the other would go to the city in the family car for shopping, and bring the other with. Go see a movie, grab a bite to eat together.

Get one of those kid’s seats for the bike, get a large stuffed… Tiger? Yeah, Tiger. Put the hat on the Tiger, strap the Tiger into the kid’s seat. Nobody will mock the Tiger for not wearing a helmet.

Lemmy IS the sub-community! I suspect that you and I would have at least a few disagreements then! Hah!
- Comment on Is it realistic to hope that lemmy grows to the size of the bigger social media platforms? 11 months ago:
I liked the variety and sheer volume of content on the other one, but I have had a lot less of those horrible interactions on Lemmy. I kind of like it being small town.

I’m not frugal, just a cheapskate. I have an i5 NUC that I got for 225$ Canadian, so like 16$ USD… (I exaggerate.) I got an old 1080p projector from an Electronics Recycling in town for 125$ CAD, and a receiver at an auction. No remote and the HDMI in was busted, 40$. So I used a USB sound card with optical out. (Another 40$.) Speakers from goodwill. The wall I project to is already white. I have an Ikea Kallax with the receiver and the projector right behind my couch. Speaker wire is scrap cat5 cable from work. The subwoofer has an annoying buzz at the moment, but it was 20$ from Goodwill, so… Otherwise, it’s big, bright, loud. I cobbled it together over a few months, but it’s a great setup and very cheap.

Not stupid at all. I think I read that Disney has something like that for charging communications equipment at the parks. (I could be remembering wrong, I am internet brain-addled.) You know the crazies would hate it, though. Smart money says that there’s an entirely port-free iPhone in the next five years.

- Comment on What’s your favorite “flop” of all time? 1 year ago:
John Carter. I just… Liked it! I feel like it was so close to being a big deal, and it got Focus Group-ed into mediocrity. Like, they could have called it “A Princess of Mars”, leaned into its legacy of being this epic thing, but instead they buried it.

Me too. It’s the parasympathetic nervous system. You anticipate bleeding. Your body goes, “Bleeding is bad. Drop the blood pressure, that’ll stop the bleeding!” It worked! I see a needle in a medical setting, I’m out like a light. Dentists are fun.

I ask myself that on a regular basis.
- Comment on Do most people still use computers, or do people only use a smartphone as their main/only device? 1 year ago:
I volunteer at the public library. Almost all the people who come in are phones only, and totally lost on a PC. They come in to fill out gov’t PDFs that won’t open on their phones and to print stuff out. My classmates, in the IT program (!) have a lot of trouble navigating on their laptops, and only a couple of us have desktops at all.
- Comment on Would you consider me a “dry texter”? 1 year ago:
I used to be a dry texter, but now I intersperse gifs of waterfalls, oceans, lakes or rivers every three or four messages. It took effort, but nobody accuses me of being dry anymore! (Also, I moisturize in the winter.)
