not really, it’s the same Matrix protocol as other Matrix instances use. the only difference is that they set up bridges and manage them on behalf of the users (something that’s possible when hosting your own Matrix instance, too).

I think if a CEO repeatedly ignored my boundaries and pushed their agenda on me I would not be able to keep the same amount of distance from the subject to make such a measured blog post
well, it’s the other way around. the blog post was first, then Vlad contacted them, then the thread was posted.

the messages aren’t end-to-end encrypted, so there’s nothing stopping them from viewing them at their leisure.

it’s not a “clone”, it’s literally using Matrix protocol with their own servers.

they’ve automatically opted Tumblr accounts into training LLMs, so… not great

yes, it’s been added in a version that has only come out of beta today, if I’m their blog post correctly.

FYI, e2ee messages like Signal’s and Whatsapp’s are decrypted on Beeper’s server before they get reencrypted and forwarded to the recipient.

given that they struck a deal with OpenAI and Midjourney to train them on Tumblr data, I’d be wary of their other stuff.

Are you suggesting you use a different index that comes from a more ethical company
I don’t, I use a mixture of Startpage and DDG, but I’m always for a lookout for other options and also don’t sign up for a subscription to throw my money at them every month.

The phone you’re using to access Beehaw? Assembled by child labor or wage slaves somewhere in Asia. Even if you assembled it yourself, the parts were manufactured unethically.
which is one of the reasons why I own a Fairphone.
and sure, you can’t avoid all bad choices, but everyone draws a line somewhere. and when a techbro makes a techbroy post about how eVErYThiNg iS pOLiTiCiZeD ThESe dAyS and how that’s supposedly stopping innovation, because people like me don’t want him to work with a guy with a history of opposing our rights, then I stop having confidence in him and cancel my subscription because I don’t want to support him financially anymore.

Just curious, do you buy things from Amazon?
no I don’t. and to answer your next whatabout question, I don’t buy from brands owned by Nestle, either.

- Comment on Beeper couldn’t bring iMessage to Android — but it can still make a great chat app 1 month ago:
I really, really don’t understand what their business plan was
iMessage on Android wasn’t their main goal, it’s just what made them famous. they’ve set out as an all-in-one messaging app (basically they let you register on their Matrix server with bridges for other messaging servers, so that they can manage them for you if you trust them enough) that also included iMessage support. for now it’s free but they’re supposedly planning to add some extra features that will require a subscription.

- Comment on Why Everyone Should Still Use an RSS Reader in 2024 3 months ago:
I used to follow a TON of webcomics via RSS, first on Feedly, then on Inoreader, but a few years ago I’ve stopped opening my feed for certain reasons (and now I’m afraid to even think of the backlog). I’ve started getting into RSS again about a year ago, followed some blogs and small news websites, and I’ve been loving it! currently using my Nextcloud provider’s RSS option with the official Nextcloud News app on Android and RSS Guard on PC (I haven’t found one that integrates better with Plasma desktop yet).
