What do you think the future of American conservatism is?
I think we're going to be heading into an era where there's broad support for conservatives like there was broad support for liberals. The fundamental reason will be the same: People just want to be left alone. Whereas the puritanical social conservatives wanted to use the state to reach into your home and tell you how to live, now the neopuritanical social liberals want to use the state to similarly reach into your home and tell you how to live.
Donald Trump is an idiot and a blowhard, but he did some things right. He was a 90s democrat, and by bringing those sensibilities to the Republican party, I think he's set a template for conservatives around the world to succeed.
The biggest challenge for conservatives around the world is going to be figuring out how to build a big tent without betraying core values. I think you can have a diverse conservatism including people of different races, religions, sexualities, sexual orientations, and even gender identities by focusing on the messages with broad application.
Philosophically, whereas academia is filled with the far-left, a few decades of educational hegemony is insignificant compared to millennia of philosophy from around the world. There's writings on morality and ethics dating all the way back to the code of Hammurabi, and so there's an overwhelming body of knowledge and literature to draw upon. Meanwhile, other than a very limited selection of the writings of Marx, the far left has by definition a disposition towards only caring what the latest book says, and so they can have the current establishment, but their ideas are always going to be half-baked. They criticize religion for example, without realizing that religious people have been criticizing religion for millennia, and so have slowly hammered out the rough parts of their philosophies.
The far left doesn't realize whose shoulders they're standing on. The whole concept that slavery is immoral comes from traditions they would prefer to throw away. The whole concept of human rights comes from traditions they would prefer to throw away. Liberalism as a whole comes from traditions they would prefer to throw away. Meanwhile, the cultures they worship don't share any values with them specifically because they stand on the shoulders of conservatism without realizing it.
So I think there's a good way forward, and it involves focusing on universal values that are nonetheless conservative. Freedom and liberty and austerity and frugality and respect for human rights and other people and personal responsibility and faith if not in a god in a value system that will reward good behavior eventually.
> future
reminds me of a punk lyric "there is no future in England's dreaming..."
conservatism is lower taxes, less regulations (liberalism), and some social conservativism like antiabortion, putting America first, gun rights, etc.
"Christian" (protestant emphasized, but then Catholic and orthodox) values were a part of the package but this might erode a bit over time
We'll take the "conservative" muslim over the commie tho sure probably

Not a bad strat. They picked people with experience and merit, who are black or muslim or gay
If they picked rando blacks, muslims, gays like the liberals, they would not get conservative votes
It fits the conservative motto: Its not about race, gender, bla bla, rather your character
Can't believe they are finally playing smart vs putting up celebrity Deep state RINOs

Her qualification was serving in the military as an officer for like 10 years... I mean, this is not bad qualifications or anything, but there are millions of people who have done this, and I do not necessarily think of this as highly qualified.
What is interesting about their push is that to unseat Ilhan Omar they are going to really try to appeal to the Somali community in that Minneapolis district and whatever conservatives remain there. I will tell you what, it is not that many... But, hey, it is a decent enough move.
It would be interesting if Shukri Abdirahman is also from a different Somali tribe which will obligate a huge amount of the Somali-Americans to vote for her over a rival tribeswoman, lol.

True, I agree with you, but it's not what I meant. In her video, her focus was anti-handouts, despite the war, deaths in her family and being a single mom
How refreshing ! Complete opposite of victim culture. She is a good influence on the public, and hopefully has the character/integrity her video shows
