My first self-hosted social media site was friendica. I liked it a lot, but I found on the limited hardware I use it wasn't able to keep up with federation demands.

Yeah it's a big php mess. This is the first time i've really looked at it. Seems pretty nice as an alternative to facebook. Kinda a 2010 look though.
