  No. Reddit gives too much power to Community mods so you can get sitewide bans for wrongthink

  Wolfballs allows bans by Community mods, but participation in the rest of the site and ability to create a rival Community. This is more fair than Reddit, and was written on the banner. They have been transparent to the users about this.

  If you want 0 rules, then Wolfballs was not the right place. Its designed for a different purpose.

  This has been talked about a bunch. I haven't found a good solution. People generally won't invest time into creating lots of content for a community if they can't moderate it how they want.

  Otherwise we would just be like twitter with hash tags.

  At a site wide level we do not participate in view point discrimination. Which makes us different than reddit or Lemmy.

    Agreed. You have been as free as possible without it being complete chaos. If there wasn't the possibility to moderate, then wolfballs will turn into 4chan.

    I like 4chan, but we don't need another one.

    Its better to be a Reddit like forum for free speech, since Reddit is dead, and wolfballs is really the only good alternative.

  Well this is a free speech website but each community has rules, for example if i had a room for cats snd you keep posting dogs, im going to ban you from that room. If certain mods are sensitive and ban ppl from their rooms then they deal with consequences of being known for that, just read sidebars for room info but hey remember that my room freeforum anyone can post anything although i have certain rules like no nudity unless it involves political scandals, try not to take it personally

      Think it through. If you want no rules, there's 4chan & clones, aether etc.

      Gab, wolfballs & Locals have "transparent" & minimal rules. You are told what will get you banned.

      Other big platforms have "opaque" rules, i.e. random bans for wrongthink. Reddit, Fbook, etc

      Decide what kind of platform you want to use. Don't blame a spoon for not being a hammer.

      Ive been banned from twitter, YouTube, Facebook, reddit, votal, lemmy, and out of respect i banned myself from the communist community on this site ca the mod expressed he wanted to ban me but couldn’t cz im admin. Dont take it personally, hatas gon hate,.

  I'm curious if someone will create a Lemmy instance for example that simply has a sitewide rule of don't post anything illegal and which disables blocking

  problem is, mods still need to exist to be able to remove legit spam and off topic things, but it could be in a modlog and admin could adjust rogue mods who delete too much stuff

  on here the rule is that individual mods can decide who they want to ban, or individuals who they want to block; it's really debateable whether this is a "freer" design or not - it preserves the freedom to dissociate from people, but that also may seem like "censorship"

    How about upvoting and downvoting mods? If a mod is downvoted a lot and its visible they will naturally be shunned.

    Back in the day, the point of a mod was not to be a policeman, but to be an MC, because forums and suchlike are meant to be active and sociable, not little fiefdoms for inadequate kittle twats to take their revenge our against the world.

    Reddit is more of the latter, full of weird, sad, fuckers.

      ehhh I think freedom leads to "fiefdoms", if I had a forum I might like to do a "right wing SJW equivalent" one that bans certain immoral content

      Problem is, reddit doesn't have freedom, so it only has leftist fiefdoms

      On a site like here you could have lefty fiefdoms but then people can create an alternative community, which isn't allowed on certain topics on reddit, so there could be lefty fiefdoms, righty ones, and "open" ones that don't ban as much on either left or right (this was the last idea I was suggesting I wonder if will be created as a sitewide thing)

    It could be disabled in code really easily. Like in a day. Its just, if you do that you offer nothing of value that mastodon doesn't already have. Communities would be no different than hashtags.

    It also puts to much power and responsibility into admins. I prefer to be mostly hands off. I think that's the best admin style

    Even gab allows groups to moderate their members.

    The whole link aggregator algorithm relies on the fact that posting is more difficult than reading. 9/10 people never post or comment. They just read other people's stuff.

    So by having votes and moderators you delegate the task of curating content.

    Its why some people prefer now to search reddit rather than google. You often get better results. You are crowd sourcing brain power.

    You need more than one type too. You need shit posting to start on twitter style free posting or 4 Chan. Then it gets picked up by reddit, wolfballs, hacker news type sites. Maybe it ends up on Facebook idk I never go there anymore.

    Someone might summarize ideas or culture in a TicToc video.

      well to me ultimately decentralization is centralization at a local level, so I'm still putting trust in admins like masterofballs

      I have yet to see a completely "trustless" system, like with bitcoin that ended up deviating from the original intent of crypto, so people forked bitcoin cash, then people tried to attack bitcoin cash with bitcoin SV and later bitcoin ABC. Point is, with each fork it required putting trust in like miners and developer teams, even while maybe it was "decentralized".

      yeah if there was no community-specfic modding I guess that would be the only difference of here over mastodon, but the different formats and limitations are needed even when a lot of the tech might be the same I guess

      I would like to build a light weight mastodon like social media service in rust. Just for learning's sake. Just have other priorities ATM.

The community values that you have to agree to are: "if you don"t like it, you can fuck the fucking fuck off, and fuck off some more when you get there" or be banned.
