I did know Bill Maher used to speak like this but a ton of lefties who were more liberal (libertarian) seemed to become authoritarian in recent years so it's been surprising to hear and refreshing

I don't understand how someone like that got elected tbh. Its nice to see mainstream media calling him out on his black face after calling the truckers racist.

His predecessor was a guy named Stephen Harper, a conservative. He was as emotive as a piece of wood, and was starting to have a growing number of scandals, and was sort of doing the dark lord of the sith thing by the end of his I think 8 year tenure. A lot of Canadians saw what he was doing and just felt it was time for him to go.
Trudeau had a huge backwind in that the Chretien liberals of the 2000s were absolutely fantastic, balanced budgets and slowly cut taxes while having steady social progress. Harper did a lot of damage to himself by breaking the budget and not really ever re-balancing it. (he managed to fake it for his last year, but he was in power for a long time, it was too little too late) Justin was young and good looking, and seemed to be saying a lot of things people did want to hear about solving long-standing problems such as throwing whatever resources were required to resolve hundreds of native reserves without water, and hopefully take material actions to stop the big protests and political battles with natives about things. He also promised to change the first past the post election system to a proportional representation system that would allow elections where parties other than the biggest ones to get some representation in parliament.
