The FCC fined Stern and Infinity Broadcasting $600,000 for that quip.
Its offensive but I'm not sure on what authority they have to fine him for the airwave equivalent of a shit post. Some one could say the same thing about the Starbucks mermaid and white women and I don't think they would be fined.
This was 1992 when radio was more powerful, and they were looking for reasons to zing him. Even without the racial angle it's a crass comment but I agree that it was hyped because in America we sacrifice everything good for diversity (which is always bad).

I enjoyed his show a lot when I had sirius radio in my car, but his whole thing has always depended on being offensive and he should know that. His livelihood depends on being free to offend, or he might as well go back to the original wnbc gig being exactly as conservative and safe as they wanted him to be.
