How do people like FitGirl, NoSteam and so on make files into "repacks"? Do they just drop a folder into a condenser and that's it? Or is it more complicated?

It is rather complicated. My understanding is that most repackers actually have their own custom pipeline for repacking and even custom tooling.

What a repack is, is just a custom compression and packaging of the video game install. Some experimental repacks cut, or rip, part of the game such that it occupies less space while still keeping the game functional. Many choose not to cut anything. A part of the is using a different optimized compression type for each type of data file in the game, then assembling a compressed file for distribution. Finally, they supply having a custom installer that reverses the process correctly.

It is a rather technical and fascinating
