Classrooms cannot, and should not, be political vacuums. Under the guise of ‘impartiality’, right-wing forces are increasingly focused on controlling and restricting which materials, topics and perspectives young people have access to in educational settings – to the detriment of the most marginalised pupils.
Earlier this week at the Conservative Party conference, shadow education secretary Laura Trott outlined the Tories’ seven-point pledge to parents to “keep political activism out of the classroom”, including vowing to give Ofsted more powers to investigate breaches of impartiality and making it easier for parents to report impartiality failures.

A frothing Tory’s “political activism” is often just common sense. e.g. it’s OK to be gay, trans people exist and that’s OK…
While of course I teach these values in basic fucking human decency to my child, I have no problem in it coming up in the classroom, especially if there’s a marginalised child in the class.
Just because some adults like to bully marginalised people, it doesn’t mean their kids should be able to get away with bullying in school too.
And that’s not even mentioning that teachers also shouldn’t be “impartial” around basic scientific concepts like climate change and vaccines…
