East Midlands Railway, which has been beset with problems while introducing malfunctioning Hitachi bi-mode trains, will also not be immediately included due to its ongoing mass cancellations and shortages of seats.

But it’s not available where it’s needed the most.

My train got canned last year when a jumper disrupted the services. The replacement train was already packed, but I used my common sense and found a spare seat in first class.

Under the National Rail Conditions of Travel this is a thing, and has been since 2016. What is new are changed refund terms that were updated on 1st April 2026, so I guess this may be the “go live” date for the updated Conditions that may be lost in the headline.

EMR are in a bind however as the introduction of the 810s has been very problematic for IC routes, but other train operators (where they run) should honour EMR tickets and the duty remains with the Operator to get you to your destination. I’m not aware of any exceptions to this with regards to a person holding a valid ticket for a cancelled service.

If anyone finds themselves in this situation, speak to staff as there is a duty to convey you. This can include overnight accommodation and taxis so it’s worth it.

  Do you know the term to search for in the CoC? There’s clearly something changing here. My partner was in fact prevented from getting an alternative train by EMR last year, and cross-country staff said they didn’t understand why EMR hadn’t triggered the agreement that would allow it.
