    The evidence on rent controls is mixed. I’d much rather councils built more good quality social housing to compete with the shoddy priced private sector.

    Then hopefully the bad houses can be returned to the market for renovation and those looking to get on the housing ladder.

      I prefer the idea of regulating against corporate ownership of housing stock and limiting private ownership to individuals and say 2 maybe 3 properties per individual.

      Homes should not be seen as assets to build a portfolio of.

      The private sector lobbying largely exists because there’s no rent controls and they can charge exorbitant prices. Just the rent control would already fix a lot to get their money out of politics. But you are correct that building more is that only real permanent solution.
