If you’re in a gerrymandered district, it makes sense to vote in the primary of the party for whom the general election is rigged. Only vote that can make a meaningful difference.

Because if you’re in it for the money, you’ll back whomever will get you money, regardless of how many people they will kill.

That’s part of it. But also district lines in the US are mostly drawn so one party or the other is more or less guaranteed to win the general election. So the only way to change things in most places is to change who wins the primary.
