Relationships like this are way too common in film. People hire their partner, brother, 3 kids and their kids partner, and they all roam the sets like a grade 5 gang. Our employment papers often have clear direction that we can’t have these relationships, but I’ve never known anyone to put a stop to it until complaints like these come out, then usually it’s fire everyone, and the ones who still have family in the industry find another job and the ones that don’t can get fucked.
As an occasional team lead in Film, with a partner who is a team lead in the same job, I refuse to bring him to work with my team, not because he isn’t good (he is great at his job, well liked and maybe a better fit for the position than me) but because even though we would both behave, the perception would be enough to sour relationships and create difficult working environments.
I wish our union would take a more active roll in these matters. I understand they aren’t their to police us, that’s what the companies are supposed to do, but it’s easier for the companies to ignore the problem, and having the union crack down on this would create a more professional pool of talent, while not alienating anyone who wasn’t born into or married into the industry.
