It's not been a good time, has it? "Austerity" wasn't an economic policy, it was a justification for needless cruelty (as opposed to policies that leverage short term pain for long term positives).

Ahhhh if only that decade of zero interest rates had been used to build infrastructure.
Obviously they were too busy lining their and mates’ pockets, and in general being totally useless politicians.
