    Extracting more means burning a dwindling candle hotter, so of course they would not increase production unless the profits increased.

    Not increasing production means they understand that they have a finite time left, which is a good thing with a long-term mindset that is incongruent with a reality devoid of a holistic understanding of the situation. If you understand the situation, you grasp the futility of the options.
