In some ways this sort of feels like the left wing version of the satanic panic. Recall that back then, they were able to convince a bunch of kids that they had been molested by Satan worshipers in a bunch of really weird ways. That's because kids are very impressionable. I don't see why we would assume that we can convince kids that they were molested by Satan worshipers in a bunch of ways that don't even make any logical sense, but we can't convince them that they actually want some horrible piece of surgery done to them.
