Farmers often work in manufacturing and construction jobs, while spouses often work in retail or wholesale industries and health care. Younger farmers often rely on outside income to pay off loans taken out to grow their operations.

I've worked with a lot of farmers who in the off season are off working as tradesmen.
The pareto distribution applies, 20% of farmers probably make 80% of the income.
