“In Oakland, when you have 19% of Black kids reading—that can’t be maintained in the society,”
Only 35% of fourth-graders met the standards for reading proficiency set by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, an even lower number than in 2017. Only 21% of low-income students (measured by whether they qualify for free school lunch), 18% of Black students, and 23% of Hispanic students can be considered on track for reading by fourth grade.

Literally the first day my son was born, I started singing the alphabet to him, and I make all the sounds of the letters. Every day I'm at home with him, I go through the sounds, and once a week I sit down with him and draw the letters and make the sounds that each letter makes.
As an adult, I still sound out words if I don't know them at first glance, and I'm a highly advanced reader.
I notice this as a theme, and it goes for so-called "common core math" as well. You skip the fundamentals and move on to tips and tricks. In reality, the fundamentals are very important, and the tips and tricks should be there, but to fill in the blanks where your fundamentals fail.

Thanks, I just hope that the stuff that I'm doing actually helps. As this story shows, all it takes is a subtle shift in technique and suddenly you're just wasting The Young person's time.
