The CA 9th-12th grade literature list contains 0 books written before 2016 (no classics). It has books by Michelle Obama, Ibram Kendi, and Trevor Noah.
FL 9th-12th list has Crime & Punishment, Hamlet, Night, Dante's Inferno, 1984, and Animal Farm.
The difference is shocking!

Before my son was born, I was aware that the number of books in the house is directly impactful on the success of the children, so I went out of my way to acquire books. I have hundreds of kindergarten level books, but in the living room I've gathered many classics, including philosophy from around the world and throughout time, Mark Twain, Homer, Tolkien, and many classic liberty minded books such as Brave New World, 1984, Fehrenheit 451, and others of that sort.
Just because something is old doesn't mean it's good, but just because it's old doesn't mean it's bad either. Likewise, just because something is new doesn't mean it's good. The benefit of history is that it lets us know which books stand the test of time.
